Potentially dumb question: in the event a gun owner does engage in whatever situation results in them being required to relinquish their guns, how on earth do "they" ensure this person does? Especially in states where it's not required to have a permit to purchase/own a gun?
They don’t/can’t. So then the person just becomes someone with an illegal weapon and then used for more fodder of how it’s only illegal guns that are used in violent crimes.
Again, why no one should be able to own these types of firearms, but let’s be realistic. There’s no way that will ever happen in our lifetimes.

An alert was sent around the state a month ago about his threats. What good is it to contact law enforcement if someone makes actual threats and has weapons when nothing happens until it’s too late?

Per the article "Clements noted that his department gets many such alerts and that his officers gave this one its due attention, keeping an eye on the base for any sign of Card."
In the article it says they did patrols/looked for him for 2 weeks. I know police lie so can take what they say with a grain of salt. Obviously more details will emerge and 20/20 hindsight and all, but at the end of the day, it’s still the guns that are the problem.

I saw someone on one of the cable networks say that 77% of people who engage in mass shootings announce their intent beforehand, yet we don’t have laws that are effective at stopping that.
I don't think the general population understands that is some/ many states someone has to petition the court for the second amendment rights to be stripped away. And by the way, the local and state police and FBI are not in the business of doing that (laws need to be changed so that they are doing this).
So who is in the business of doing that? Family members can petition to the court against potentially violent family members, and pay filing and attorney fees. Or family members can remove the guns if they are named guardians. So you can see why family members might not 1. realize there is a problem or 2. want to spend their money and time to go after someone who is potentially violent with no assistance from anyone.

This has a lot more details about what happened recently. I understand hindsight is 20/20, but I’m just so sad that there was actually a chance these shootings could have been prevented. Law enforcement was concerned, the military was concerned, his family was concerned - I’ve already accepted that guns will never disappear, so I want to believe that warnings can help, but clearly laws need to catch up (which also will never happen).

That’s sad. I don’t know what the answer is. There are thousands of severely mentally ill people in this country. The paranoia and things he said are not all that unusual for someone with a severe mental health problem. Since owning a gun is a right it means that laws and policies don’t necessarily make it easy to get guns taken away and for that to fall through the cracks unfortunately.
