An actual request that's entirely work related. Albeit entirely stupid.
My company is realigning my division. Part of this comes with a new office and a new floor. My division will now be located with our subsidiary.
I took a tour of the office space I'm moving to and noticed that.. none of the desks have modesty panels. Just the top of the desk and nothing hiding your legs or lower body. This really bugs me, likely because I sit like a weirdo - no shoes, criss cross applesauce style, easy seat, whatever. With every desk I've ever had in my career, this hasn't been an issue. Our offices are all glass windows vs. real walls, so very on display.
I want to ask them to add a modesty panel to the desk, but I don't know if this is frowned upon for being too high maintenance of a request or not. Clearly the people who currently work on the floor who have an office have used these desks and not made the request. Or if they made it, it was denied. But it's mostly men so maybe they don't care? (Heck, maybe its not a man/woman thing and just a normal/weirdo thing.)
One lady who moved into my division had them rewire/relocate lights above her desk because they were too bright and bothered her - that's the only time I've heard of anyone making a request. I'm sure more have been made, but I just don't know about them.
I think whether people think it is high maintenance or not, I guess is based on that individual person/ company culture. I would still ask and not care though because it obviously is a fault in the design.
As a manager, I also go through and evaluate work space at least yearly and have purchased new desks and dividers, so this is in the realm of normal in my area.
It sounds odd. Is there someone you can have a conversation about it with? I’ve never heard of the phrase modesty panel but can picture what you mean.
“Hi Bob. This furniture is unique. How am I going to sit comfortably when I wear a dress in front of that glass?” Even if you don’t wear shirts/dresses
I feel like the same men who remodel bathrooms with no hooks for a bag also designed this.
campermom, I only know the phrase modesty panel because we just bought a desk for the house and opted out of it. I had to go back to the order form to learn what it was called.
I think it’s a very reasonable request. I like campermom’s phrasing, and wouldn’t use the term modesty panel. I would ask for a lower panel so that you can comfortably sit and work while wearing a skirt or dress.

Not a weird request and I would use the phrase "modesty panel" when making the request. I think when they hear that phrase they'll immediately arrange for it for you.
