After Thousands of Earthquakes The tourist attraction, a geothermal spa that is popular with Americans, said it would “carefully monitor the seismic developments” as a precautionary measure.
Thousands of earthquakes recorded over the past few days have led to the pre-emptive closure of the Blue Lagoon, an iconic tourist destination in Iceland.
The largest of those earthquakes was of moderate strength, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the country’s weather service. It reported that there were 1,400 earthquakes recorded in the country over a 24-hour span from Wednesday into Thursday. Thousands more were reported in the days before.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
An Icelandic town home to about 4,000 people near the capital Reykjavik could be heavily damaged by a volcano expected to erupt within hours or days, according to experts.
The town of Grindavik on the south-western coast was evacuated in the early hours of Saturday after magma shifting under the Earth’s crust caused hundreds of earthquakes in what is believed to be a precursor to an eruption.

We were in Iceland this summer and left just a few days before the last eruption, which was in the middle of nowhere. Although there were many earthquakes then as well, most of them can't be felt unless you are really close by or it is a bigger quake >4 on the Richter scale. We also visited the Westman islands which suffered an eruption in 1973, when the people living on the island had only a few hours to evacuate after the eruption started. This time they are much better prepared with better technology to monitor the situation. Still, I hope for the best for the people of Grindavik. Even if the volcano doesn't erupt in their town, there is extensive damage which can take months to repair.
