I’ve noticed an uptick in masking lately. Where I live has always been a masking stronghold but once I leave the city and hit the outer suburbs it would drop to like 1%. But the last few times I’ve been out in the hinterlands to Target/Costco and today a festival on the county fairgrounds I’d say about 30-40% were masking.

I don’t know what it means but it’s interesting.
I wonder if it is the proximity to thanksgiving. I think people are sick of their holidays being ruined.
Did a virtual visit and was prescribed paxlovid. I reaaaalllly thought I just had a sinus infection. I'm super head congested, and my ear hurts from the pressure. No chest symptoms or anything. Tested this morning out of an abundance of caution and it popped positive right away. During the virtual visit the provider I saw said that this variant is presenting just like a sinus infection/very head cold-like.
In any case, I feel ok other than the head symptoms. I'm sad that I exposed my new office to covid.
I just went and got my covid vax at the grocery store this afternoon. It's Moderna, the pharmacist told me they were sent much more Moderna than Pfizer and now Moderna is all they have. This is my first Moderna shot, so we'll see how it goes.

I was wondering that too! I noticed it right before Halloween a little bit as well.

I'm going to start masking in the tube not just to hopefully not get Covid again but also because there is so much other respiratory ick out there right now that I don't want to get.

We're in the same area, and that happened to me as well on Thursday. Thought I had confirmed Pfizer, and nope, all they had was Moderna.
I got it anyway because I was not going to reschedule (who knows when they'll have Pfizer back in stock). So far, just a little tired. I had way bigger reactions to Pfizer in the past than I am currently having to Moderna, but I don't know if it's this formulation of vax or the ingredients that P uses. I have heard in passing (or maybe I read about it on the boards) that if you've had Pfizer vax in the past and then get Moderna this time around, the reaction is way less. It's been true for me, but I can't say if it's causation, correlation or coincidence.

This seems to be the case for me, too. My arm is hella sore, I'm slightly more tired than usual--but so far, that's it. I haven't even gotten a noticeable fever, which I usually do.
It's been interesting to see how my body handles a novel virus vaccine and how it has changed over time. The first dose knocked me on my ass for about 36 hours, I felt terrible. Then one of the early boosters made me feel awesome, it was almost like a subtle high--so bizarre but great, lol. I had covid once about 18 months ago and haven't noticed any difference in reactions pre-covid vs. post-covid.
I have lost count of how many covid vax I've had at this point, but my reactions definitely seem to have moderated over time. I haven't had any that made me feel as bad as the first one. Now I seem to be at a point where I have a slightly bigger reaction than the flu shot and that's it. Which I will take as a good sign that my immune system is basically like, "Oh, yeah, this again. I know this one" and doing its thing.
Which is still kind of crazy, considering that this was an entirely new virus just a few years ago. It really makes me appreciate the adaptability of the human immune system, the fact that human scientists figured out a vaccine so fast, and the efficacy of the vaccines.

This was 100% true in my house. DH had Pfizer for his primary series and had like a 104 degree fever from it but his moderna booster had no reaction beyond a sore arm.

@@ DD tested positive for the first time. She took a 2 hour nap after being picked up from a sleepover (because of course this had to happen right after a sleepover, so I feel terrible about exposing that family!), then asked to go to bed early. H was sure she was just worn out from the sleepover, but I tested her this morning just to make sure. Her test turned super dark immediately. Now she just has a bit of a sniffle and is enjoying all the YouTube and Roblox time I’m giving her.
Crossing my fingers that she doesn’t pass it on to either the sleepover family or me and DH. Of course, I don’t think I’ve ever not gotten sick from DD, so I’m not holding out much hope this time.

I was similar, I had a very strong reaction to Pfizer but much less to Moderna. My sister had only had Pfizer and had almost no reaction to it. Maybe a slightly sore arm, but none of the fever and body aches that I got (she loves to brag about how good her immune system is because of this). She just got Moderna for the first time and had a fever and everything this time. So strange!

C is home sick with a negative test but behaving exactly as you described here. Skipped dinner, put herself to bed early last night. Sigh.
My neighbor was over yesterday and shamed me for having a stockpile of covid tests. I currently have 12 boxes of BinaxNow because Minnesota will send out four free boxes at the beginning of each month to whoever wants them. My parents are both in their 80s, have respiratory issues, and I see them daily. I need to protect them. Stop fucking shaming me asshole.

Ugh. Sorry C is sick, too. Hopefully she stays negative and bounces back quickly.

Your neighbor is dumb. Why does she/he even care how many tests you have? They aren’t in short supply anymore. When anyone gets sick we go through a ton in our house. I’m glad I stocked up when they were free. Once these run out, it’s going to suck having to pay for them given how expensive they are.
I just got over Covid, first time ever having it. And I ALSO had Flu AND strep! I texted my pcp the Sunday I showed symptoms (and they came on suddenly and very strong). She had me do 2 covid tests at home which came up negative. But on Tuesday when I went to her office it was a strong positive. Like Pixy, this was a heavy head cold/sinus infection type thing (except for the additional strep which was horrid). Had Paxlovid in addition to the abx for the strep, I'm very sure it helped but I didn't start feeling not terrible until day 12. Took until day 16 to test negative again. Glad to not have had any chest symptoms.
We tried to be careful (both masked) and I isolated as much as possible and we already sleep separately, but DH got it a week after me. His case was much lighter, he wound up not taking the Paxlovid his Dr. rx'd.
Oh, I also had the crazy ear pressure from the congestion. I was nearly completely deaf (I am already hard of hearing and wear aids when out), I thought I had an onslaught of ear wax blockage and I'd have to wait until I was better to go to the ENT to get it cleaned out, but no, it was just incredibly congested ears. I've never had it like that before.
Yes to congested ears and thinking something was wrong with my hearing aids, lol! I had to stop wearing them because they were making my ears hurt since everything was so swollen.
I'm taking my last dose of paxlovid tonight and feel almost completely normal.
We went until now with no COVID but DS (12) tested positive Thursday (with strep too) and DH tonight. DS seems to be mostly OK and DH is going to take Paxlovid but the pharmacy was closed by the time his test came back. I'm still testing negative. I feel dumb because everyone else on earth has had it but I have no idea what to expect. What's everyone's recent experiences been like?

I have it for the first time now. I started feeling really achy, the way I always do when I start to get any sickness, but tested negative. The next morning, I had a very sore throat and a productive cough, and tested positive. About 4 hours after I tested positive, I was able to start Paxlovid. All my symptoms went away within a few hours of starting Paxlovid. I don’t know if it’s just luck that I responded so well to it, or because I was able to take it so soon after symptoms started, but I would *highly* recommend taking it if you end up testing positive. The only symptom I have at this point (day 5) is that I get very tired very easily. Otherwise I feel perfectly fine (aside from the fact that my mouth tastes like death thanks to the Paxlovid, but sucking on these drops takes the taste away for a while: www.target.com/p/vitamin-c-supplement-drops-citrus-80ct-up-38-up-8482/-/A-14770928 )
