DD started her period right as summer was beginning last year. She is really struggling with her period at school. She keeps having leaks into her underwear/playground shorts. I’ve encouraged her to change her pad more often, but she claims never to have time. They do have very short passing periods, so she would need to ask a teacher to use the bathroom.
DH is completely grossed out by period underwear, but I’m wondering about the period undies that are meant as backup. Have your daughters tried those by chance? Any feedback?
I’ll admit I’m side-eyeing the shit out of your DH for being grossed out about something that could potentially help your daughter from being humiliated/embarrassed at school.
Anyway- my daughter had been wearing the period panties for the last 3 years. They are great for back up.
lovetx, he doesn’t mind it as backup. More as her only period product. He’s the laundry guy in the family and a huge germaphobe, so I swear he hand washes every article of clothing before it goes in the washing machine. And he’s the one who has to deal with the aftermath of leaking, so he definitely wants to help that situation too.
DD1 started wearing period undies over the summer. She was late getting her period (13.5) so she wears different brands (thinx, I forget the others). I also got her some back-up undies for her lighter days. Her periods seem pretty heavy from what I can gather.
I will say this... DD1 is like the WORST when it comes to hygiene, cleaning up after herself, etc. I love her, she's my daughter, and she is gross. HOWEVER, she's really, really good about the underwear. She rinses them when she changes them until the water is clear, and hangs them in the bathroom until they're dry or I can grab them and wash them. Maybe if she has to be responsible for rinsing and hanging to dry before laundry, your DH will come around?
Also, I can't remember if she needs to wear a uniform to school, but DD1 wears black bottoms on the day before and through the end of her period. She's lucky in that she's been pretty regular so far (except when she got her period 2 weeks early during a camping trip - that sucked, she was unprepared and the closest store was 45 mins away). It sucks, but might reduce the embarrassment if she has another leak. Before my ablation I always wore black to work during my period. Some days were so heavy that I couldn't make it the 2 block walk between the train station and my office without an issue. So I always had extra black pants just in case.
I personally use period underwear as backup and use them exclusively the few days before my period should start just in case.
DD 7th grade also says there is no time to go to the bathroom during her 3-minute passing period but none of her teachers mind the kids asking to use the bathroom once instructions are given. 6th-8th all have the same bell schedule so there are a lot of kids trying to go or redo their makeup in the bathroom.
I’ve tried period underwear personally and I dislike them as the main event. They didn’t wick the moisture away and caused a rash. Changing underwear is more difficult than a pad.
I think they would work just fine with a pad or tampon though as backup for leaks. As back up I don’t think there is much to do laundry wise. There shouldn’t really be enough blood for extra care so I would just throw them in the laundry with everything else. That being said your DD could also do laundry or take some responsibility for doing a rinse if needed.
I’m personally not a fan of period underwear (and I hate pads), but it can’t hurt to try them for your DD!
My 11-year-old daughter hasn’t gotten her period yet, but I’m hoping she has light ones like I always have. Having to worry about leaks at school sounds awful

My almost 12yo started her period over the summer and they’re pretty heavy. She wears knix as backup. I do too. I would be fine with her wearing them all the time too but she would rather not. She does wear period swimwear — which shook me at first I’ll admit — but we swim a lot and she just couldn’t manage a tampon. Idk why but with the option of period swimwear I wasn’t going to fight it. No issues with leaks and she rinses it out when she undresses before either washing it by hand or in the swim/towel laundry.
For the backup, she does her own laundry mostly. If there is a heavy leak she rinses it and puts it in the laundry room sink to be tossed in with towels if she isn’t doing her laundry right away. For small leaks she just tosses it in with her regular load and it’s fine.
Her socks and not always remembering to right-side them is much more of an issue.
DD1 is 12.5 and has been menstruating since she turned 11. She finds period.underwear pretty comfortable and wears it often, even when she's not on her period. She wears pads with them when she is on. They're a great back up.
