basilosaurus my hometown fought against getting a Walmart for at least a decade. The city lost. There is now a Walmart. It used to be orchards because I live in apple country.
I took 2 cruises this year. Guilty. Cruising would not have been on our radar except we were invited to join friends on the first one so we did. My parents went with us on the second one and oved the entire experience of spending time with the entire family. For a "once in a few years" type of family experience, I could afford it. Our lives would've been fine without the cruises too but the ships will still sail whether we are on them or not. The cruise industry is out of control, building bigger and bigger ships to keep attracting people to them.
I'm super cranky this morning so excuse this short answer - we.stop.doing.things. I don't care about *reasons* for cruising. I just keep thinking, "If the bridge industries 'offered a good deal' to jump off the bridge, you'd probably do it." (You being general.)
What do you think is going to happen when the entire world breaks out into a war over resources? People are still going to cruise for shits and giggles? We are at end times. I really can't stress that enough. People are dying at Taylor Swift concerts from record breaking heat, but no one is batting an eye. I'm arguing on the internet that people can't take personal responsibility for their actions because they're being given "a good deal". Fuck.
I absolutely 100% think yes they will.
The rich will be on cruises to avoid the unpleasantness of the war over resources.

Arguably, this is already happening... but I don't doubt it'll get worse.
I'm reading an old sci-fi book right now where humans are the one species in the universe who keep ruining their own homes, and it seems like the the thesis seems to be building toward the idea that it's because we don't have racial memory. In the book all the aliens have some level of racial memory so they actually learn from their mistakes en masse over time but humans just keep fucking things up over and over again (a kindly alien had moved us to a couple of colony planets and we were destroying those too I'm oversimplifying but whatever)
It's...depressing. I should go re-read some Octavia Butler, Parable of the Sower and really just knock myself out.

wawa so basically we are the aliens from Independence Day
re: culture change. I just got back from a trip to Japan (yes, I traveled and I own it). I was trying to explain Tokyo- the density of housing, the lack of cars and the AMAZING public transportation system- when I came back. But I said even if they had that same transportation system in the US, people wouldn't want to use it because everyone wants to get in their car and go places door-to-door. The entire mindset is different. I look at my mom who has only ever lived in the suburbs, and she just can't wrap her head around it. Next year our family vacation is at a cabin in a campground (a Jellystone, for those familiar) and my mom was stuttering for words when I told her that we don't need to rent a golf cart for the week, we'll be fine walking (and she is disabled and will have her mobility scooter so she doesn't even need to worry about it for herself).
