soon to be 11 and nine-year-olds both want AirPods for Christmas. I was planning on buying some kind of cheap knock off brand, which they are fine with.
Now the Apple second GEN AirPods are on sale for $80. If they actually work a lot better and would last a lot better, that’s getting to the point where I wonder if I should consider them?? But are the cheaper knock off ones just as good? And if so, any particular recommendations? I just don’t want to buy some $20 ones that turn out to be total crap.
The most recent recommendations thread on ML has this same question with several cheaper options recommended. I use a $20 Amazon pair and have had no issues at all, so I’d go that route. (These are mine: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BG2P8NSH/ )
Do you think they will be able to keep track of them and not lose them? If so, then it might be worth it because they’re great and they last a long time. If you’re not sure, maybe go with a cheaper option (people recommend the Anker SoundCore).
My DS is 13 and got AirPods for Christmas last year and he has held onto them. One thing that is nice is they are part of Find my iPhone so you can locate them easier. I had another pair of bluetooth headphones that worked fine, but they just stopped working recently. I got the $80 AirPod pair from Target and really love them.
Have your kids tried them yet? Bluetooth headphones didn't really work in my DD's ears until recently. Her ears were too small and fell out. I would just make sure they work in their ears before buying if you can.
No idea about knockoffs. But the Apple ones come with a one year warranty and if you buy with a CC with extended warranty you can add a year to that.

Can you afford it and are they into the name brand? Sounds like they specifically asked for AirPods, not just wireless ear buds. At that price I’d buy them as long as you think they are responsible enough. Dd has them and uses them a TON. I actually just bought the pros for her for Christmas because I have the pros and the noise cancellation is amazing. She has auditory sensitivity (as do I) so the noise cancellation would be huge benefit. But the regular ones seem to be great and work seamlessly with her phone. She’s a teen and has friends with them so I definitely think name brand is more desired for her age group for sure.
I have been burned so badly by off brand electronics, so I will always purchase the known name brand if I can afford it. My DS13 has air pods and we love that he cannot lose them because of the tracking (except in like a lake or something, lol).
