So just as background I get my hair done every 10ish weeks, haircut and partial foil highlights. I have dark, extremely thick, extremely coarse kinky difficult to manage hair that is all complicated by the fact that I have bad scalp psoriasis. It ain’t cheap or quick ! Between $300 and $350 each visit and I’m there at least 3 hours, often more like 4.
Up until recently I have had some greys that were pretty easily covered with the highlights. This past visit I had to see someone else because my normal stylist was unavailable. I had not noticed too much grey in my scalpline prior, but apparently they all decided to come in overnight because the new stylist was like oh! There’s so much grey. I wasn’t super happy with what she did for a bunch of reasons, but I’m going back to my other stylist and I need a plan for managing my grey. I went on November 15 and by 4 weeks out I was already seeing so much grey in my part and my temples.
How do I manage this grey? I’m going to go bankrupt and live at the salon. I really need my highlights to soften my hair or it’s too severe. If I try at home root cover up am I going to mess up my highlights? I really do not think with my life and budget that I can manage the salon every 4 weeks (I know root touch ups are less time and money, but it’s still going to add up). And I’m not going to go natural!
If you figure it out, can you please let me know? I have dark brown hair and am in the salon every 8 weeks (and that's pushing it). I thought about letting it go gray - but I don't want gray, i want beautiful silver - and that takes salon work too. plus all the pictures i see where i think "oh wow her gray hair looks amazing" - all come with a face full of makeup - so to me, that's just something else then that i need to do.
I want to embrace gray hair - but realistically, it's going to make me look much older than I am, and I just can't stomach it yet.
So I think my hair is too dark to go safely blonde all over. But the stylist I saw gave me a dimensional hair color (whatever that means) so I’m wondering if the darker tones she put in first are making this all more noticeable to me. I hope so.

It would definitely be a process to go lighter all over. It wouldn’t be in a visit or two. The people who seem to manage their grays better, just go lighter to more closely match them. I too am dark haired and starting to get grays and have no desire to accept them.

I’m not ready!!!! It does look great on some people, but mine won’t be silver. It’s like this faded grey or white and with my coarse texture it will look like a witch. It will not be smooth or pretty. When I was googling I saw all this stuff claiming to stop greying hair. I don’t really fall for schemes, but part of me was like here!! Take all my money 😂
I’m in a cycle where I get my roots covered every 5-6 weeks. I actually need it every 3-4 weeks but a) I can’t afford to have it done that often, and b) my stylist doesn’t have that much availability. I have dark brown hair that I’ve lightened to a medium brown, and I’m trying to lighten as much as light brown, hoping that I can do highlights and gracefully just go grey from here.
I’m facing a major career change in the next two years, so I’ll probably keep up with coloring at least that long, until I get hired and settled, then go grey after that (because age bias is real, even if I’ll only be 45 at the time).

It stinks. I have dark brown hair and look awful in lighter hair colors, it just doesn’t work with my complexion. I go every 4-5 weeks for a root touch up because by then I’m getting self conscious about how bad my roots are. I have no plans to go grey anytime soon because I’m not comfortable with that (and I’m only 42, so I feel like it will age me). The root touch up is shorter and cheaper than when I do full color, but it’s still time and money.
I'm giving in to the greys (I'm probably 75% grey at this point) after 20 years of coloring my hair. I'm also only 42, so I know it'll age me, but IDGAF. I'm fully embracing my crone era.
So far I like how my roots are coming in, though I think I may be near the point of plunging into some type of blending with the still-brown 3/4 of my hair. I was talking about it with a stylist last week, and her recommendation was to dye it all platinum, which I definitely don't think would look good on me, so who knows.

Someone at work started with dark brown hair and as she got more and more grey she went lighter and lighter. Now she is a medium blonde, kind of golden, idk how to describe the color. I noticed her roots when she gets close to a solon appt but only because I'm a weirdo and look at people's hair to see how they manage it. I doubt the average person notices.
Anyway my best guess is she gets an all over base dye and then highlights/lowlights that somehow blend to look approximately the same as her growing out roots in darkness.
I have black hair. When my greys come in they are super coarse and frizzy. I get just my roots dyed every 6 weeks and an all over dye every 3rd or 4th time. I don't do highlights because it's a major process with black hair. I have a great stylist that charges $100 for the root dye and $175 for the full. I find that manageable. I let my greys come in over Covid and was pretty unhappy with how much it aged me.
I stopped doing base color on my brown hair in 2020 because it was just making any highlights SO warm and orange, even with toning. So now I do some highlights to blend the grays and just let the others come in. I’m 40 and if it’s making me look older, oh well.
I'm 44 and I push it to every 10 weeks to cover the grays. I should go more like every 4 - 6 but I can't handle going into the salon that often. Going blonde is not an option, my hair has been black since the day I was born.
I want to embrace gray hair - but realistically, it's going to make me look much older than I am, and I just can't stomach it yet.
No. It won't. It's such a myth. Grey hair isn't ageing at all. It's what you THINK is ageing but now people of all ages are wearing their hair grey and many of us are doing it naturally (I know 30 year olds who have gone au naturel...they do not look 'older'). I look younger with my salt and pepper than I did with the artificial colour that I had to do every 4 weeks. I promise you, it's a myth.
I have dark hair and I have to go in every 5-6 weeks and I NEED it when I go in. It’s so pricey but I’m just not ready to go gray. I can stretch it out a bit sometimes using spray on my roots to cover the gray but it’s not an ideal solution.
Basically it sucks to ge going gray with dark hair and there’s no easy solution unless you do embrace the gray.

I have dark hair and I do a root touch up every 3 weeks. I mostly go to the salon to get a single process but I sometimes do it at home. I really like the dpHue color. You can get it at Ulta, Sephora, etc. I don’t think it will mess with your highlights.
I went blond gradually. Started with lighter highlights and added more and more. Now im completely blong. I still have to go every 5-6 weeks but i only do root so the price isnt too bad.
Im trying to plan on how to go gray gracefully at this point. My hair is probably 60% gray.

I like the WOW powder that you brush on. It’s easier and looks better than the spray IMO.

No solution but commiseration. I have dark brown hair. I started getting grays at 25 (as did my mom and my grandma so I knew it would happen). I go in every 6 weeks to get trim/root cover up/highlights. But the grays start showing at my part and temples after 4 weeks. I just let them show. I refuse to go more frequently than 6 weeks and also don't want to use box dye and potentially mess anything up.
ETA: One of the managers at work who is in her 40s has beautiful silver/gray long hair and it looks amazing on her. I am not against at one point just going with it and embracing the gray but I wish I could just jump from now to all my hair being gray. I think I'm going to hate the in-between as some of my hair is gray but some is still brown.
I'm UAF....so it' doesn't matter. I embrace the greys. I'd say my hair is less than 10% grey. My mom still had brown and silver hair into her early 70s. She still wasn't fully grey when she passed.
I do touch ups myself which I’m sure others who spend hundreds can discern but whatever. I hate the upkeep and I seriously don’t have time to spend hours at a salon for it. But I also do not yet like the look of my sparkles and I feel better looking fresh without the obvious roots. I am kind of starting to embrace the idea of going gray after I outlive my mother, which is in about 2.5 years. I think I’d like to do the full processing in one day to just be done with it but I still think you have to grow it out for that, so I don’t know.

My stylist lets me come in for what she calls a Touch and Go. I come in to the salon, she applies the dye to my roots, then I leave with a plastic shower cap covering the hair with dye on it. I go home to wash it out. It still takes time, but so much less than a full cut, color, and highlight. It's also way cheaper. She used to charge $25 for the touch and go. Now it's $50, which I think is pretty steep, but since she lets me schedule 2 touch and go appointments in between full appointments, I'm okay with it. I schedule an appointment every 6 weeks. The last week I start seeing my grey roots, but they aren't awful yet.

Same. The only phrases I can think of are not kind and I’d be sad if someone was talking about themselves that way so I hope that’s not it.
