I had finally convinced my dad (who has been in the hospital about 3 weeks and will be discharged soon) to switch to iOS so I could get him a watch for health monitoring purposes. Alas.

Maybe the older models? Or do they not have the AFIB and falls monitoring?
I want to respect patents, but this also pisses me off. I had surgery in 2022 and my body was stressed from it so I went into AFIB when discharged. I didn't feel well so I used the ecg feature on my apple watch and it detected AFIB. I went to the ER and they confirmed I was in AFIB and put me on an IV med to level out my heart rate.
I love the security of my apple watch since then. Congestive heart failure runs in my paternal family and my dad died of a stroke at age 56 and wasn't very overweight but had high BP his whole life as did my brother. High BP AND CHF combined is not a great family history for predicting a long life.
I would like my FIL to wear one to detect falls and to monitor his AFIB which he is treated for... Grrr

The older versions offer the fall detection and ecg. My mom has a series 5 and we got it for her for this exact purpose. Samsung watches offer all of this too. I have the Galaxy 4 which seems to be more reliable with the ecg when we have tested them together.

Fortunately my dad doesn't have an arrhythmia (though my mom and I both do, and my watch has been fantastic for my own monitoring), but he does have central sleep apnea and had two cardiac events in the hospital that may have been related to low blood oxygen. So the O2 sensors in the watch were a big part of the draw.
There are several other brands and kinds of watches that have these features.
Do you have any recommendations? The apple watch is all I've used personally, and while my H has an Android phone and watch, he's found the heart sensors to be utter garbage. One example: the software seems to try to predict heart rate from activity level rather than just measuring it, so when he grinds his coffee with the arm wearing the watch, his heart rate suddenly jumps to 140 bpm. That's the kind of false alarm we definitely don't want when monitoring a relative from afar.

The article says that Walmart, Amazon, and Target are still selling them…for now.

Google is your friend. I used to follow DCRainmaker for his in depth reviews.
