How do you keep up motivation and focus with longer projects? Or do you not?
Curious how people think about this.
I've got a really overly ambitious crochet blanket project going that I started a few years ago, and set aside for a long time after basically making an oversized scarf because there were a bunch of other smaller things I wanted to make (baby blankets mostly. So many babies suddenly.), but I've finally pulled it out of UFO storage to get rolling again and am admitting to myself that this is at least a year of steady work at the rate I'm going. Truly laughing at my comments in my ravelry project page about how long I thought this would take to start. (I seriously thought i could gift it for xmas the year I started it)
It's a "throw" sized to cover my 6'1" husband (so functionally a queen sized blanket), out of fingering weight yarn. It's turning out great, this yarn and pattern are so fun, but...seriously wtf was I thinking? I can do about 4 rows in a typical evenings worth of crochet time, which is only like...an inch. Maybe.
In the meantime there's so many other things I want to make. Would you just keep on keeping on this project and everything else can wait? Give yourself permission for a certain amount of other projects? Do whatever the spirit moves you to do? How much WIP discipline do you have?
I do have a seperate travel project because this has too many active balls and is too big to travel, so I'm not stuck with JUST this. But I think I'm going to try to actually not start a single additional project until I hit AT LEAST halfway on this because I don't want to let it languish for another 2 years like last time.
I’m not the best to weigh in since I’m in a rather long crafting slump, but for me, yarn-work begets more yarn-work. So I’ll work on whatever I feel like I want to work on, not necessary the thing I should be finishing, because if I do something I’ll end up doing more something.
So I really should go knit a hat, and maybe then I’ll actually finish crocheting the blanket that’s been sitting here for 12 months.
ETA that blanket is gorgeous! Definitely looks time consuming.
