I also do not feel confident Biden can beat Trump. I mean, obviously, he HAS beaten Trump before, but I’m making zero assumptions that he will again. There is a lot that has happened (and not happened) in four years and I don’t know if the voting energy will be the same this time. This, frankly, terrifies me.
But, I DO think Haley would beat him. I do not share the same fear about a Haley presidency as I do a second Trump presidency, but I’m still not going to switch affiliations to vote for her.
I just really wish I could hit fast forward and see what happens. The next 10 months are going to be brutal.
I think one of the big questions about Haley is will Trump supporters vote for her if she is the nominee? I am not sure they will.
No, the die-hard Trumpers will just not vote or write him in. I think there are more Haley supporters who would vote for Trump than Trump supporters who would vote for Haley. But there are still a lot of people who will just vote for literally anyone as long as they have an R behind their name.

In my optimistic moments I envision a write in campaign that splits their votes.
I don't fear gallery like trump in the sense that I don't think she'd be the end of democracy. Minimum standards have fallen so far. Everything else about her I dislike. She's still a far right nutjob who can't bring herself to say the civil war was about slavery, something I previously also thought was a minimum standard.
I have a lot of thoughts about this election year, and they don't all hinge on Biden/Trump themselves as tipping the scales. If this was a "normal" election year, with "normal" Republican/Democrat type of issues I'm betting this would be a record low voter turn out year. No one is excited to vote for the geriatric old guys.
That being said, the issue of abortion access is still pushing turnout to the polls. We're going to see larger numbers just because of this one issue alone. Especially if hard numbers, like the TX article I posted last night, keep coming out. I haven't looked, but I bet a couple of states have abortion access issues in the general election this year. This will hurt any Republican on the ballots, especially if they're running on a "Prolife" ticket.
On the flipside is the Biden Administration's continued unwavering stance in supporting the genocide against Palestinians. This is hurting Biden in the polls. I'd wager that we see a good D turnout for the downline candidates, and maybe people just opting not to vote for the Presidential ticket. My friends that I use as a barometer of general voters have been posting things like (paraphrased), "Why should I vote against the guy who says he's going to perpetrate genocide, and vote for the guy who's already funding genocide."
TL;DR - I don't think this election is going to be about the candidates. I think it's going to be about the issues at hand.
My parents went to the repub primary in mn (even though they are staunch dems) to vote for her. My dad was very proud of their form of protest for trump. Lol

I don't know if Haley will still be in the race by the time our Primary comes around, but I switched from Democrat to Republican the 1st time Trump was on the ballot to vote against him, and I've stayed a Republican because I've found that I care more about having a voice in the Republican races, meaning I'd likely be ok with almost any of the Democratic candidates that win, but not so with the Republican races. So yes, I will still be Republican for this primary and will be voting for whoever has the best chance against Trump at the time. I would love to go back to voting for candidates I actually want to support instead of feeling like I'm using my vote to vote against someone, but I'm not hopeful our country will be stable enough any time soon to allow for that.

I was talking with a friend who is a naturalized citizen and her daughter who is 30 years old-- neither of them have ever been able to vote in a presidential election where they felt like they have voted for someone, only against the other guy. All while feeling like we're teetering on the edge of a precipice. It's demoralizing.

I know we are all frustrated with the candidate options. I think it’s a good thing if people vote on policy, not the cult of personality. It’s like the bus analogy… you aren’t marrying the candidate forever, you need to go with the one who is going to drop you off closest to your destination. Biden’s handling of Palestine will lose him votes, but I also shudder to think about what would have happened with Ukraine if Trump was president.

I also want to remind all voters that there is ALSO a possibility of a Supreme Court Judge dying during the next Presidential period (there is always that possibility) and to have a Republican be able to put another right winger in place would be a death knoll for so many more people. THAT is why, if I could vote, I'd go for a Democrat, even if I hated some of their stances or policies.
And I disagree that Haley wouldn't bring on the end of Democracy. I think there's a possibility that she's just sane and evil and will go along with the right wing group that have taken over.

The general is a long time away & so many things could change. Voter apathy is going to be the biggest driver (or suppressor) of turnout and the results. I know many Dems are disappointed in Biden - both his age, his policies, etc. but I hope that many are fired up enough to vote AGAINST Trump and all the other down ballot GOP races. The Democrats should focus on the choice between the parties as a whole and what GOP control at the local and state and Congressional level means. Take the focus of Biden and broaden the message and motivation to include all the awful GOP candidates and positions. I'm still salty that we can't "straight ticket" vote here anymore...

So I had to look this up because I thought straight ticket meant you choose a party and then you turn all the levers for that party down from the top to the bottom. No, apparently it's simpler than that, you just check the box of the party you want and that means you voted for everyone running from that party.
I’m registered independent, which in my state means I can vote in either primary. If Haley is still in the running both H and I would vote in the R primary to vote for her.

Yes, it’s only available in some states. When I worked on a campaign in PA someone I knew socially was surprised to learn she didn’t have to vote straight ticket. She honestly thought she had to and didn’t realize she could skip that too button and choose candidates from both parties (she was a not particularly intelligent Republican who I got to switch parties for the candidate I was working for).
