My only advice with a glass top electric stove is to make sure the bottoms of the pans are flat. My mother's Revereware copper bottom pans are not perfectly flat and rattle around on the stove. I'm convinced they don't work as well.

I’ve never used electric, so I don’t know if you need a specific metal for that. I have several stainless steel Calphalon pieces that are awesome & a few non-stick Food Network brand pieces that are great.
I have the Kirkland brand (from Costco) stainless steel set. I loooove them! I also have a glass, electric cook top. I would rather have gas, but it works just fine.
I did a lot of research on them before buying, and they are almost as good as sets twice their price. I think I paid less than $300 for the set. They have the copper coils in the bottom and are really heavy. I would definitely recommend them.
Since they aren't non-stick, I bought two Calphalon non-stick pans from BB&B for things like eggs.

I need to see what I even have when I get home, I know it's Caphalon stainless steel but I am not sure which set it is. I don't love it but maybe I should try it out on the new stove and go from there.
They're pretty heavy. They feel... worth the money, I think. And, my last set was a $50 at TJ Maxx Tramontina set, but the coating came off. I decided to splurge.

I love my All Clad pans. I have 2 stainless steel pans, and a stainless Dutch Oven as well. Expensive, but they've held up incredibly well. I agree with scotty if you're going to get just one piece, get the 12" fry pan.

We have a stainless steel set (Calphalon, I think), and it's great! Sits flat on the electric top, withstands my parents using our flatware on it when they visit, and cleans up easily.

I have All clad and I love each and every pot and pan dearly. While, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them, but they're expensive. My bigger recommendation is to get a stainless set and get one non stick frying pan to make eggs in (assuming you eat eggs).
I have a green pan set and I really like it. They are ceramic non-stick pans that are not teflon based. The only thing that is kind of annoying is that the hottest setting you should use is medium so it takes a bit longer to get things boiling but once the pan is hot it holds heat really well. From what I understand once the nonstick wears off you just use it like a normal ceramic pan and just use more oil/butter.
I have had my set for two years and they still look like they are new.
