Is anyone really knowledgeable about Medicare? Someone on another finance board asked questions about bringing their parents to another country and Medicare and it got me thinking. Google isn’t helping to much.
My partner is about 1 years older and is a permanent resident (for 20+ years). He’s been thinking about getting citizenship but hasn’t been a priority.
So 1) can you not qualify for Medicare if you’re not a citizen? and 2) what’s the deal with how much it costs and your work history in regards to Medicare cost? My partner has been mostly self-employed throughout his career here, so very few W2s.
Thank you for any info or websites we can read about this!
My mom has been a permanent resident of the US since 1974. She retired 5 years ago and went on Medicare and social security just like a citizen would.
She probably worked 35 years in her time here as a w2 employee.
As a permanent resident, really the only thing she can't do is vote. Taxes and benefits are the same as citizens.
Ok thank you! Some people in this other post were saying something about Medicare and citizenship and how much you have to pay, so I got confused/worried.
Here is info from AARP. I am not an accountant or have any real knowledge, fyi. Has your partner paid self employment taxes since he is not a W2 employee? Those include $ for Medicare from what I remember.
