I'm thinking about Greece this coming December; family of 4 with tweens. One is interested in history and mythology; one is a foodie who loves trying new things. We like to sightsee and eat, but also would be interested in trying out a nontouristy area.
I am just now starting to research, but would love any suggestions from the group. Thank you!

A friend of mine was just there in December. She had never been to Greece before. She went to Chania in Crete and to Athens. Just realize that most of the islands will not have much to do in the winter. That said, she said she enjoyed Chania more than Athens. She thought Athens was dirty and there was not much to do at all. But the weather is quite mild in the winter.
I've been to Crete twice, once in early October and once in July (hot!) and it has a lot of history and mythology (Knossos palace) but it's not very non-touristy. When we went to Greece on our honeymoon in 2007 we spent a few days in Athens (this was before the new archeological museum opened, would love to see that). We took a day trip to the Argolis area, which is non-touristy and has a ton of history. We visited Mycenea, Epidaurus, and Nafplio. I wish we had more time to explore that region. But again, I'm not sure what will be open in December.
