Breaking news, no other details at the moment. I'm assuming it's prostate cancer, since that's what he just went in for.
ETA: According to the BBC, it is NOT prostate cancer, but it was discovered during the prostate procedure he had last week. He has already begun treatments, and according to the Palace announcement, will be stepping back while he undergoes treatment, and expects other senior royals to step up during this time.
Someone on Reddit said "Good luck with your slimmed-down monarchy, sir" after that quote.
I keep reading it must be serious if they stated treatment right away, but also think this isn’t random Joe. It’s the king of England. I imagine if he needed something it would be happening ASAP without the usual hold ups. Serious or not.
This isn’t that surprising to me, solely based on cancer statistics, since the incidence rate climbs as you age, so there’s a much higher chance over age 60 that increases a lot by 75. King Charles wasn’t a smoker although he was exposed to a lot of second hand smoke I’m sure.
Obviously his reign is going to be short compared to his mother’s. I hope it’s treatable and there’s a slow transition for William so he doesn’t become King until his children are older. I just finished watching the last 2 seasons of The Crown (I took a hiatus when it got ugly between Charles and Diana). I’ve never been a King Charles fan but he did support modernism and change for the country and monarchy, in opposition of the monarchy, which I think was needed.
I read that Harry is flying to the UK to see his dad. Given everything that has gone on in the royal family, hearing this makes me wonder if it's fairly serious. I do wonder if Charles will expand the senior working royals to include Beatrice and Eugenie.

I saw an article recently insinuating that there have been meetings with both of the York princesses and the speculation is that they are being asked to take on work .

I know Harry's relationship with his family is not great, but I do feel like even if they found cancer early and has a good prognosis, I could see him still wanting to fly out since any cancer diagnosis is a shock.

I was thinking the same thing. It's his only living parent and a cancer diagnosis is always shocking and scary, even when the prognosis is good. I can absolutely see why he would rush there regardless of how concerning it is.

Yeah, of his 7 senior counselors, who are deputized to take on additional duties for the monarch if needed, 3 of them (Harry, Andrew, and Beatrice) aren’t working royals. 🥴

I know that the royal watchers here could explain it to me in deep and pointless detail, but this always throws me for a loop. WHAT FUCKING WORK? It's not as if they run the country!
Beatrice, we desperately need you to go to the children's charity gala and present the gilded horse shoes to the most special orphans! think of orphans beatrice! If we aren't seen on the lawn kneeling before a child in a deeply relatable manner and later wearing a very fetching but tasteful gown while smiling gracefully who KNOWS what might happen?! Slightly fewer overly rich old money assbags might donate their dirty imperialist riches to these particular orphans!
Also if it is prostate, many older men have it and survive it. And also I couldn't care less if he does survive. It affects me none
Usually when I don’t care about things I don’t voluntarily open them, read them, and respond to them, typing various iterations of the phrase “I don’t care” for three of the four sentences of my response.

I know, I don’t get it either.
It seems like some British people still really love the monarchy and absolutely think they work hard- particularly Anne, William and Kate.
I also wonder what their lives would look like if there was no royal family. Like, how do you just end that? How do any of them get real jobs? And then what happens to Kensington and Buckingham Palaces? I have so many questions about the logistics lol
I wonder if it's a blood/lymphatic cancer that might have been discovered via elevated WBC counts or other markers on pre-op blood work. If he's doing out-patient treatment, that sounds more like chemo than radiation.
The year that my mom was diagnosed with cancer, the diagnosis happened in January (I think) and my mom and dad kept it a secret from me and my sisters until that Memorial Day weekend when mom lost her voice. (I only lived a two hour drive away, so I certainly saw her in person several times while she was keeping it a secret from me.) She kept it a secret from my grandmother until after grandma's birthday at the end of July. (Unfortunately, my mom did pass away in late October of that year.) So, just compared to my family's own experience, it seems to me that it's pretty serious if Harry is flying in now.

Well, I don't know what Will and Kate would do. Perhaps they could get a contract doing Netflix documentaries like Will's younger brother?
I believe that the Duke of Windsor (former Edward VIII) made extra money by doing magazine interviews and giving the media a tours of his residence.

The The claimant to the disputed Headship of the Imperial Family of Russia / the Romanovs is 70 years old. Her son and heir is a businessman.
So, I guess that if the monarchy was abolished, Will and Kate's offspring could go become stockbrokers or something.
I have no doubt that they all have friends in high places that would hire them. The York princesses both work and I’m sure they had plenty of opportunities available to them.

That’s something I don’t understand either when British people justify the monarchy. In US, First Ladies always sponsor pet causes (like Michelle Obama and healthy eating and Military families) and celebrities fundraise for certain charities (like Jennifer Aniston and St Jude’s hospital). But it seems like the British charities are much more reliant on Royal sponsorship for fundraising. They also seem to do things like open new wings of hospitals and recreation centers, which would be done by local government people in the US. Would all the donations and publicity dry up if the Royal Family wasn’t involved?

Things to note: it's the over 60s who are the biggest supporters of the Monarchy. It's about 50-50 for those who are under 50 and less than 40% under 25. This also holds true for the belief that the Monarchy does good for the country (numbers are lower all around though by a bit).
While the King and Monarchy are largely symbolic, they do have to sign documents sent over from Westmister (again, more symbolic than not). The King meets with the Prime Minster every week (meant to, at least). The King hosts heads of state and diplomats, they oversea estates and do promote a lot of fundraising.
How would things go without them? It'd be fine. They all have enough money of their own without needing the taxpayers funds (I'm not a fan of the Monarchy and would be fine if this was the end of the line, but I don't want anyone to die). The causes would be taken over by other people, most likely, or they'd still do it to remain in the spotlight for a while.

I am so sorry to hear this. That family has had such a rough few years with the issues with Harry and the Queen passing away. I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.
In terms of what they do this is so easily googleable. I get that many of you see no value in what the royals do,in the same way I suppose that one could ask what value there is in a president showing up to a disaster scene, but their schedule sounds completely exhausting. I would hate it and would find a regular job far less taxing than what they do.
I personally think with Brexit, Covid, the Queen passing away and the economy challenges the UK is facing, I would like to see some stability in the royal family as there doesn’t seem to be any from the politicians. It may be more of a symbolic stability than anything else, but perhaps it’s better than nothing.
I really hope Kate recovers well too. Poor William. : (

Radiation therapy is outpatient treatment as well.
