This is accurate. And thank God for small favors, because I can't imagine navigating the subway in a full on evening gown.
I always end up cold, so make sure you bring a wrap of some kind or an easy layer to take on/off during the show. It's usually stuffy when I sit down, but part way through I start to freeze. Longer lengths are easier to sit in, or pants if you prefer.
Where I live is more casual than the Met, but here you will see everything from jeans to cocktail attire. Wear what will make it special for you and feel like an event. If you are tall, keep in mind heel height for sitting in long stretches with minimal movement. I still dress for occasions, but anything you would wear to an evening wedding will probably work.
