I had no idea they were still in business. Haven’t seen one in ages. But in the mid-90s, that place was everything. I had so many bath beads from there.

They are my main provider in SE Asia. They're a big promoter of not using animal testing and promoting safer sax (seriously, they are my main condom provider). So I hope they're not gone for good.

I did not know The Body Shop sold condoms. I worked there in college and the most interesting thing we had was satsuma body oil. I’m glad they do this, though, although I’m guessing it’s not something the US has embraced.
I am apparently very invested in this story. The funny thing is, I thought from a business/marketing standpoint the sale hurt them long ago. It has been happening with many of the pioneers for sustainability. They were once great safe havens using natural sourced materials, but as more people became interested in those items the bigger companies swallowed them up and took away their identity. Some slowly started adding chemicals into items and took brands a 180 from their beginnings.

I think it was a country specific thing where they partnered with an AIDS prevention org. Condoms are available at every 711, so they're not in short supply, but I was very happy to see it and support their mission.
ETA This is a country where hotels will ask for your marriage certificate before allowing a couple into a room. So I think that's important context of just how progressive body shop is with their promotion.
They're MLM in the UK and perhaps Australia. Wonder if they're shutting down that also.
This is so bizarre to me. Why would they go MLM when they already operate stores and you can order online? I lived in the UK for a number of years and never heard about them as an MLM there (to be fair, I hardly ever heard about MLMs in the UK in general). I know they had stores in London for sure. In Canada they were pretty much in any decent size mall for decades. It doesn't seem like typical MLM operations.
ETA: not arguing your statement, I'm just flabbergasted that I'd never heard of this.
I don't know that it ever was MLM in the US? I just know that in some of the anti-MLM groups there are a lot of Americans who argue with Brits that it's not a MLM and have to have the Brits explain to them that it is there.

I was in a Facebook group for Curly & Wavy hair and recommended a Body Shop product twice, which got me pinged by one of the admins making sure I wasn't an MLM seller. That was when I learned it even had an MLM arm, which I agree, seems super weird for something that started as a brick and mortar store.

It was an MLM in the US, too. In the early/mid 2000s, my friend’s mom sold for it and I was roped into going to a few sales parties. I remember thinking it was very odd to go to a direct sales party for what I could just as easily buy at the mall.

I also think they did an MLM type thing in the US a couple years ago and it was something like “The Body Shop at Home.” Someone I know who is in the MLM world had added it to her “portfolio,” but I only know because when it ended a year or so ago she was so upset and made that the body shop was taking $ away from her family.
Despite these missteps, I’ve really enjoyed the company since I first came across them in London in ‘98.
