We’d like to get DD a kindle. She’s 13 and an avid reader.
Is the Paperwhite worth it, or would the “classic” Kindle do the job?
What amount of storage is best? I have no idea what kind of space ebooks take up. I imagine we’ll borrow ebooks from the library for content, but I’d like her to be able to have several at a time.
I think the Paperwhite is worth it if she’s an avid reader. It helps me quite a lot with eye strain compared to the classic one or my iPad. I don’t remember what storage size mine is, but regular books don’t take up a ton of space. If she’s into graphic novels or manga, that might be a different situation.
Any Kindle that isn't a Fire/tablet will have the e-ink screen, which is pretty comparable to reading on paper in terms of eye strain. The Paperwhite is nice if you allow her to read at night and she doesn't want to turn on a lamp. E-books take up minimal storage--I've never had to delete a book from my library (though many very old ones are archived and would need to be re-downloaded at this point) and I've been a Kindle reader for over 15 years now. You can have hundreds on a Kindle without needing to worry about it running out of space.
Any storage should be fine! I routinely have 5 or more books out at once from the library and own dozens more and have only used like 3% of the storage.
The nice thing about Paperwhite is that you get no glare from the sun. I read outside a lot, so this is important to me. I have about 2000 books on my kindle, many free that I have downloaded.
I’d get a paperwhite and didn’t even realize storage options existed. I’ve used a kindle for well over a decade and have never had to consider whether I was running out of space, so I’d just get the lowest level.
I'd definitely get her the Paperwhite and as other stated smallest size is totally fine. I have tons of books on my kindle (it's 2 years old) and use about 2GB. 26GB free still and I downloaded an 8 book series file recently.
Plus, if she happens to fill it up, which is highly unlikely. All books are saved in Kindle content on Amazon.

Also chiming in for the Paperwhite being worth it! But wanted to add, that I was looking to update mine and the 8GB one is on a long backorder from Amazon so you may want to go with the 16GB model for the extra $10.

As I go further down the rabbit hole, the Paperwhite Signature 32gb is on sale right now (ad-free) for only $10 more than the 16gb ad supported model. So, basically, if we buy her one, we're going full tilt, lol
I got myself the Kindle Paperwhite kids. It is 16GB and comes with no ads and an included cover (if she can deal with one of the kids cover options - I have the green one lol) for 169 and the OEM covers are pretty expensive. The other alternative is to look for your preferred configuration in the Amazon warehouse store.
Do you have anything to trade in? I had an ancient 1st gen Kindle Fire that was spotty about even turning on sitting in a drawer for years and they took it and gave me a good amount off.
I don’t know if the purchase is time sensitive, but it seems like the cost is even more reasonable during Prime Days because they tend to heavily discount the Amazon tech products.

That’s what I have for the same reason! It was on sale and only $10 more than the super basic one. I like not having ads!

That sounds like a really great option!
I love my Paperwhite. It’s so small and lightweight, I have to double-check that it’s in my (smallish) purse. It’s a great piece of tech for those who love to read.
We ended up buying the Paperwhite Signature that was on sale. I realized i could trade in an old echo dot we didn’t use and get $5 AND 20% off the purchase of the kindle. That brought the price down to almost the same as getting the OG, basic version of the kindle without ads. It wasn’t really a time-sensitive purchase, but H and I will do a lot to incentivize reading, and DD was excited about it, so we decided to strike while the iron was hot! So far we’ve downloaded a few cheap and free books from Amazon, and she’s going to put her library list together.
I really wanted to set it up in DD’s name, but she’s on our Amazon account as a child, and I couldn’t quite figure out how to use that account without it being limited to very juvenile book choices. So, for now, the kindle is under my account.
