I think I would use the word "extended" to describe when the shower curtain is fully covering the shower. I live alone and don't usually have a reason to discuss the state of my shower curtain.
I see it as a door of sorts, so when I'm in the shower and nobody can see me (i.e., the curtain is spread out), it's closed. If it's pushed to one side, and there's a line of sight from within the shower out to the bathroom and vice versa, the curtain is open.
Do you differentiate shower curtains from window curtains? I would never look at a window that is covered completely by an outstretched curtain and say I have to close the curtain. I would say open the curtain. And if I were in a scenario where someone asked me to open all the curtains in a home I would make sure that the windows were exposed.
The idea that anyone would say or mean the opposite is super baffling to me.
On mobile so can’t see poll, but I feel like I have asked DH “did you close the shower curtain?” Or say something to him like “you left the shower curtain all bunched up.” (Clearly most of the discussions in our house have been around him leaving the curtain in a state where it’s not going to dry and thus get mildewy).
Our current house has shower doors though now. Problem solved!
Well now I’m second guessing myself! But that was my initial response, so I guess I have to stand by it. 😀
No, please feel free to rethink your life! 😂
I think I say them both! I’d tell my son to shut the curtain if he was showering, but then I’d also tell him to pull the curtain open if I wanted it to dry out.

That's me right now.
Shower curtain spread out = closed. Because you have literally closed off a space for privacy. Similar to a pp, when you "close" window curtains, you are pulling them together to cover the windows and, again, close off a space for privacy.

I can’t even understand how a closed curtain (ie: tub completely covered) would be “open.” I guess if I wanted to clarify I’d say something like “spread out the curtain so it can dry.” But….it would absolutely never have occurred to me that anyone would interpret “closed” as bunched up.”

Lol I totally see where you're coming from!
My partner and I had this debate several years ago after a confusing conversation. I was saying "open" for it being spread out, which I conceded was incorrect for all the reasons people in this post have said. But my instinct is still that open is spread out if you're not in the shower. Illogically, if I'm in the shower and he or my son poke their head in, I tell them to close it lol. Basically, I say both "open" and "closed" for the shower curtain being spread out, and I have no word for it being all bunched up, because I think it should almost always be spread out and never have occasion to tell someone to bunch it up! I am aware this makes no sense haha.

BUT I DON’T KNOW.
This is where I am! If I’m in the shower - or one of the kids is - then spreading out the shower curtain is closing the curtain.
But one I/they are out - I want them to open up the shower curtain so that it dries. Apparently I am in a very small minority.
