House gift- weird or nice?

We are on a spring break trip, staying with good friends in Mexico. The bed H and I slept on the first two nights was....awful. we moved to the couch last night.

I let the hosts know the bed is too firm for us. They seemed understanding.

These mattress seriously felt like box springs.

We are wondering if we get our friends a memory foam mattress topper.... Or would that be offensive?

The mattresses are brand new. Money is not an issue for this couple, so it's not as if they bought the best mattresses they could with their means.

How well do you know these friends? And how often will you be staying there?

I bought my mom a whole bedding set (topper, sheets, duvet & cover) for her guest room because hers was awful and never felt weird about it... but that was my mom. And I stayed there a lot.

I honestly can't imagine buying friends a mattress topper though? They're aware now, they probably feel bad, and since they aren't hurting for money, I'd be surprised if there wasn't something better there the next time you visited.

I might buy a good friend a mattress topper if I knew their preferences or maybe experiences a really nice mattress topper and wanted to share the joy. I would not buy someone a mattress topper after having told them their mattress was unsleepable. It just risks coming off wrong, IMO, even with good intentions.

Are you still staying there for a while? If so I might buy one so you can move back to the bedroom and just say ‘hey, since we prefer a softer mattress, we got a mattress topper for us to use while we’re here. Feel free to do whatever you want with it after we leave.’

I would not do this. It's rude...just because you don't like their bed doesn't mean it's not comfortable.

This is what we did. We know this couple quite well. The husband and H have worked together for nearly ten years and have become close friends during this time. H took the lead on the mattress topper buying. The topper made a huge difference last night and we have more nights here.
