Were in totality. Schools are closed and our Governor just issued a state of emergency because of expected crowds.
It will be cool if the weather cooperates but I’m a little over it. I sold a ton of custom glasses but that’s been stressful, I still have an order of 3000 that may not make it in time.
I think we’re just doing our backyard or maybe DH’s office in case he wants to fly the drone.
I am so jealous of everyone in totality and also everyone who can drive to get to totality. I have coworkers in the path, and all of last week anytime it came up I would feel so jealous 😅
I'm still excited for the partial eclipse that we'll have in our area. Not excited enough to source glasses lol, but still excited 🤗

The partial eclipse is still awesome. I also have FOMO because I’d like to see it in totality and we’re close, so we’re going to try because we didn’t last time. But partiality is great. In 2017, I can remember sitting in my office looking out the window at the sun with my glasses on, and our building services worker came by to empty my trash at the same time. He and I shared the glasses and sat in awe, then my building started trickling outside to share the moment together and look at the shadows/get a better view of the sun. It’s really neat.
May everyone have a cloud-free, wonderful viewing experience. There are very few things that make us act as a community anymore and very few shared experiences that bring us together. A solar eclipse is a great excuse to marvel at something with your nearest thousands of best friends, lol.
We're about an hour north of totality; was thinking about traveling but now I'm really kind of meh. Plus DD has a homework project I need to help her with but I'm working all weekend so Monday really needs to be spent on that. I think we're like 99.7% so we'll head to the backyard. Fingers crossed that it's not overcast!
For those who aren’t going to totality, we were in the 97-98% band last time around, and it was really neat. One of the things that stuck out to me was the shadows. Don’t forget to look down!
I’m glad to read this! We’re in 99%. Now I just hope it isn’t too cloudy!

Somehow or another on my TikTok I got on the wrong side, and all these people are gonna stick it to the Left by looking at the eclipse without glasses. 😂😂😂😂
Our local news has a story about someone who purchased eclipse glasses that they have learned are not approved as safe by the American Astronomical Society. The AAS has a list of approved sellers here: eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters; they recommend not purchasing them from Amazon or eBay.

We were around 89% but have access to a house in path of totality, so we took the chance. No regrets so far, lol. We aren't heading home until Tuesday, so hopefully traffic will be better? A girl can dream. We also went to a NPS unit today to get the NPS eclipse badge because we are science nerds here.
I bought our glasses months ago but JUST NOW thought about a phone camera filter. I wonder if I can hack a pair of sunglasses to cover all the cameras and if it would be safe... Hmm.
I need to stay out of this thread or I’m going to end up packing up my kids and heading to my hometown, which will have 99.5%! It’s only 4.5 hours…at least there! The drive back would be a different story.

💀💀💀
They already metaphorically are blind, so why not add physical to it? These people are oh so dumb, but we already knew that.
I saw or read somewhere that I think it was a local news channel showed a picture of trump as an example of what not to do. Whether or not it's actually true, it's still hilarious.
We were going to join the craziness and drive to totality, but then I got COVID from our Easter gathering with friends. We can no longer stay where we planned and I don't want to expose DD & H by being in the car together for hours and hours anyway. Nothing to do but make my peace with hopefully seeing the partial eclipse from home.

Multiple people in a local moms FB group are keeping their kids home from school because they have a “gut feeling” that something bad is going to happen (end of the world). It has nothing to do with crowds…no one is coming and lots of people left town.
Apparently they’ve read it in their Bibles that these are a sign of the end times…but missed the part about how no one will know when that time will come?? We’ve known about exactly where and when (to the minute!) this will happen for years and years!
But then others are angry that teachers aren’t taking their students out. Also not realizing how stressful (& what a liability!) it would be to have one person making sure every single student was wearing their glasses properly. It would only take one kid for all of the “Mama Bears” to come for the whole district. (Plus I think it might be just as cool and more educational to watch a livestream of totality than 86% in person where you can still see the change in light outside.)

94% here. I have a pair of glasses and may head to the local college campus where the local astronomy students will have solar filters and telescopes set up. My father and I went in 2017 for a little bit. He has covid at the moment so I may go alone. My sister is traveling to Syracuse tomorrow to watch. I was excited to share this with my 10 year old niece but she is out of town for a few days!
My school is being bonkers about this, and I'm over it. Everyday we get a flurry of emails about it.
We do get a half day, and we aren't even in totality.
The local SUNY campus here will have telescopes, some glasses and solar filters if you want to bring the kids. I can send you more info if you are interested.

My fellowship has been talking about this for the last year and gave us all glasses!
We’re going to be at about 88%. Similar to the 2017 eclipse when we lived in a different state. It was pretty cool, but not life-changing.
C has the day off from school (teacher work day) and I have a few pairs of glasses. Not sure if the weather will cooperate or not. C has an obsidian disk that we bought in Mexico — apparently the Mayans used obsidian disks to view eclipses thousands of years ago, which allowed them to learn so much about astronomy. Of course we seem to have misplaced it, but hopefully we can find it by tomorrow!

A friend of mine knows people who are keeping kids home because of terrorist attacks. We live outside Detroit. I was trying to find ways to nicely explain that we would be at the very bottom of the list for terror attacks and they're like "but why? We're the home of the automobile?" Lol

Lol. There's a reason there are strategic military things in Omaha. It's dead in the middle, so distance wise it's very protected, and no one gives a shit about it.
But, why are these nutjobs worried about a natural phenomenom that's been mentioned in so many histories across time and cultures? The world didn't end then, and it won't end now. It's just plain science which I guess is its own threat to morons.

Ive been living under a rock! I’m glad everyone is so excited! My partner did get us glasses so I have a pair, but as far as I know I have patients scheduled all afternoon.
I’m sure I could Google but does anyone remember an eclipse in elementary school? I swear we all went outside with glasses. Just find it interesting with the juxtaposition now with schools closing and/or changing dismissal times. Did any kids have eye problems after the eclipse in the 90s? I would be interested to know! Our daycare assured us they’d be keeping the kids inside in the afternoon.

Yes! I remember an eclipse when I was in 3rd grade. I remember we made pinhole in shoeboexes to view it "safely"-adult me questions how safe this really was. I was thinking about it this week and looked up historical eclipse dates - I think the one I remember was May 1, 1994.
People are so fucking US-centric. There are total solar eclipses every two years (roughly) and approximately 30,000 earthquakes a month. Dumbasses.
But didn't you know? The bible favors the US!
No lie, I used to listen to crazy christian talk radio to keep me awake on early morning commutes. I needed to yell at something to stay awake.
I remember one call in show saying the reason the US isn't mentioned in the bible is because of blah blah crazycakes. Or maybe it's because the US didn't exist? IDK.
The "expert" pastor said something about how it either means the us sides with the right or the wrong which is why it wasn't mentioned.
WTF
It's just a natural phenomenom that happens regularly. There's not significance. It's just cool to see. Yay science! But, sure, give all your life savings to a grifter because it's clearly the end times. For the nth time.

We live in 90% and I am actually in the path of totality right now (Utica, NY) but leaving for home tonight. We debated staying up here one more night to catch the eclipse but we will just accept 90% so the kids don’t have to miss school.

My house is 99% but we are going to a ski area 50 miles northwest to be in 100%. It's $20 for guaranteed parking, restrooms, food trucks. Should be fun!
