We are like 90% and I am really wishing I thought ahead and bought eclipse glasses, but I wasn’t following this very closely. Is there anywhere I could possibly buy them locally?? Like target, or Walmart or something? Elementary kids are getting glasses at school and will be watching it or something. No mention has been made of this for middle school or high school, but I can’t believe they’re just gonna have them sit in class during the entire eclipse??
We live in 90% and I am actually in the path of totality right now (Utica, NY) but leaving for home tonight. We debated staying up here one more night to catch the eclipse but we will just accept 90% so the kids don’t have to miss school.
Ive been living under a rock! I’m glad everyone is so excited! My partner did get us glasses so I have a pair, but as far as I know I have patients scheduled all afternoon.
I’m sure I could Google but does anyone remember an eclipse in elementary school? I swear we all went outside with glasses. Just find it interesting with the juxtaposition now with schools closing and/or changing dismissal times. Did any kids have eye problems after the eclipse in the 90s? I would be interested to know! Our daycare assured us they’d be keeping the kids inside in the afternoon.
Yes! I’ve been thinking about this lately. I looked it up and it was spring of 1979. I was in kindergarten. What I remember is making pinhole viewers out of shoeboxes and going outside and running around. We were not in totality.

Yes! I remember an eclipse when I was in 3rd grade. I remember we made pinhole in shoeboexes to view it "safely"-adult me questions how safe this really was. I was thinking about it this week and looked up historical eclipse dates - I think the one I remember was May 1, 1994.
Yes! Now that you mention it it wasn’t glasses, it was making something ourselves lol. And yep 1994 sounds about right!

Our libraries gave them out. I’d totally send you some if we had time, I have so many leftover.
Multiple people in a local moms FB group are keeping their kids home from school because they have a “gut feeling” that something bad is going to happen (end of the world). It has nothing to do with crowds…no one is coming and lots of people left town.
Apparently they’ve read it in their Bibles that these are a sign of the end times…but missed the part about how no one will know when that time will come?? We’ve known about exactly where and when (to the minute!) this will happen for years and years!
But then others are angry that teachers aren’t taking their students out. Also not realizing how stressful (& what a liability!) it would be to have one person making sure every single student was wearing their glasses properly. It would only take one kid for all of the “Mama Bears” to come for the whole district. (Plus I think it might be just as cool and more educational to watch a livestream of totality than 86% in person where you can still see the change in light outside.)
A friend of mine knows people who are keeping kids home because of terrorist attacks. We live outside Detroit. I was trying to find ways to nicely explain that we would be at the very bottom of the list for terror attacks and they're like "but why? We're the home of the automobile?" Lol
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus
The eclipses I remember from childhood were at times that weren’t school dismissal adjacent like this one and the 2017 one. I think that makes a big difference in how they are handled. In 2017 we were on vacation (not to see the eclipse!) and there were signs saying to avoid driving during it. 1994 was an annular too which people don’t seem as excited about?

And it’ll probably take 15 hours to get home!
Right. It would probably mean missing two days of school/work, not one lol.
We will be in 99% and my 11 year old wants us to drive to be in 100%. Sorry kid. I am going to pick him up early from school to watch it. They aren’t dismissing early which seems risky - we get out at 3:15 and peak is at 3:09.
I did not order glasses bc my husband was sure we still had some from the last one in 2017. We’ve moved 3 times since then. I spent yesterday afternoon searching and did not find them. Magically I got some from Amazon delivered today.
My parents are in the path of totality and we considered going there but it’s a 10 hour drive and we just got back from spring break. 99% is close enough for me.
Looks like traffic on 15 through PA is pretty heavy today!
Definitely feeling the FOMO today and it doesn't help that I found out my brother and SIL are driving a couple of hours north to be in the totality. I do think they're underestimating the crowds and may be surprised by some frustrations.
And I'm reminding myself that 97% and my own driveway is still damned cool!
The airbnb we are staying in is absolutely magical. We'll be hanging with a bunch of highland cows during the eclipse and it's supposed to be clear and in the 50s. I can't wait to see how they react.
Of course there isn’t a damn cloud in the entire sky. Tomorrow on the other hand…
Right?! I flew into Cleveland today with DD who's six. We then drove up to Erie, PA and it's completely sunny with minimal clouds. Tomorrow is looking pretty cloudy though....

Oh please do report. I want to live vicariously.
I can only hope this ushers in a rapture. Get those assholes out before the election.

This made me laugh because it sounds like you’re hoping those highland cows GTFO. 😂
We live in the path of totality (Buffalo) so we'll be staying local. I'm not planning to drive anywhere because I'm sure traffic will be a nightmare. H took the day off and I'm planning to work a half day. Most/all schools around here are closed. We're about 2 miles from one of the Olmstead Parks, so we might ride our bikes and pack a picnic. But they are blocking off the fields/grass and asking people not to go on them due to all the rain we've had since the ground is soft. I think it will be a shit show.
I am borrowing my dad's 300mm lens and ordered a solar filter, so I'm hoping to get some pics. I have a DSLR that I rarely use, so I'm no expert... just read a few tutorials and chatted with a friend who is really into photography.
The weather here is actually supposed to be decent. Few clouds and almost 60. After the week of rain and waking up to snow today, I'm pleasantly surprised.
My dad is coming to my house (from NT to Williamsville) and we’ll probably walk down the street to the park. We may have a nice view right out my front door though so we’ll see. DDs will be with XH so I didn’t plan anything more. He’s got a good size backyard so they shouldn’t have to walk anywhere. I’m excited and really hope the decent weather holds.
Ugh, sweetchix, it's gone from mostly sunny to 80% cloud cover. WTH. From what people are saying, it's still supposed to be cool. And the weather guys said there will be some breaks in the clouds throughout the day so fingers crossed it's clear at 3:18!
We are about 94% for eclipse coverage. Supposedly a good chance that it won't be too cloudy this afternoon, so we'll get to see it. I bought both my kids eclipse glasses. DD will be getting off of the bus right around peak coverage/eclipse, so I will walk to the bus stop to meet her (and ask to borrow her eclipse glasses for a few seconds). That is the extent of what we're doing. We were just on spring break last week, and didn't have the time or money to spend on more travel.
we're in totality and it was definitely busier up here this weekend than normal for April. This morning I went to the bakery on my way home from the gym to grab a couple half moon cookies, and there were a lot of different faces. We'll just stay close to home. Its perfectly clear out now, hoping the clouds stay away.

Good luck to everyone viewing in totality today! I hope for clear skies and chill traffic. We opted to stay home because cloud cover to our nearest totality location was at 60% this afternoon and I am scared of getting trapped in traffic for a really long time with little kids. I’m living vicariously through you all! It will be amazing!
WE have about 90% here. I am feeling a bit sad I didn't travel but DS has been so stressed about school lately, I couldn't have him miss more days. DS' teacher asked if someone could make eclipse cookies (basically black and white cookies but yellow/black). I did, they look ridiculous. Hopefully the kids enjoy lol.

lol as if any of them would be taken in a rapture.

I was just talking to H about this the other day! We did the notecard trick and stood outside while Mrs. May ripped butts.

I vaguely remember the 1994 eclipse. I remember going outside during school, with no glasses, no cereal box or anything to protect our eyes. Just the teachers saying "don't look at the sun! and kids daring each other to look.
I realized over the weekend I have a few friends in path of totality, but they all work full time and most of their employers won't let them out to watch it unless they use PTO. Plus the traffic getting back just isn't worth it. I don't think people understand that some of these areas are literally one road or maybe a 3 lane highway. People are going to be so mad going home.

A couple of pages behind, but maybe the younger people who want to vote R but won't wear eclipse glasses won't be able to see the ballot in November? No seriously I'd never wish eye damage on anyone, but come on folks this isn't their first eclipse!

I saw my dad this weekend and he mentioned end of the world coming. He watches virtual mass and often ends up down youtube rabbit holes. I know his mind is going so I thought it was that, or maybe the Priest's homily, but there must be conspiracy theories between the recent earthquake in NJ and the eclipse. *sigh*
