For work reasons, my 6 week trip to South America in October/November has changed to a 3 week trip, and since we haven't booked it yet we probably can't go before December. We really want to hike the Inca Trail, but I'm not sure if it would be better to put it off over going in December when the weather will probably be bad. Anyone do it late in the year and have opinions on doing it then? We want to TTC soon, or this would be an easy decision to put it off and go elsewhere.
Other suggestions of good places to go instead in December? I think most places on my travel wish list have crappy weather in December. :-(
I hiked the Inca Trail in December 2005 (arriving at MP at dawn on Christmas morning) and had no problems at all.
It may have rained one day, but overall it was a great experience and I would not let the time of year be your reason to skip it.
You need to look into permits ASAP as I know they go fast.
Yes, I know they go fast! I thought I saw tickets for 5 weeks out available a couple weeks ago, so I thought we were good for a trip in early November and got the time off approved at work yesterday. Then went to book the trip last night and the soonest there are permits available is November 22nd. I had to beg for the time off in November instead of December... feeling really dumb now...
... Actually, just got off the phone with DH, gonna put Peru off to April. Gonna go somewhere else for a shorter time in November or December. Hawaii? Spain? Costa Rica? Hope my boss is relieved rather than pissed at me for jerking them around for nothing...

We spent the last few days of 2010 in Cusco, Peru and hiked the Inca Trail the first week in January of 2011. We had fantastic weather most days and it rained only one afternoon for about 15 minutes on our Inca Trail trek. We loved it and didn't regret our off-season choice to visit Peru at all I say still go for it!
We also did the Inca Trail in Dec, we had little issues with rain but did here horror stories! I have no advice where else to go, but do you think you could do South Island of NZ? Three weeks would be prefect.
December is a pretty good time to go to Antarctica, depending on what you want to see (the December highlight is hatching penguin chicks). I've also been to Kerala and Singapore in December and they were both fine. Yangshuo and Guilin are cool that time of year, so you can't swim in the Yulong, but it's a great temperature for cycling. What about a gorilla trek in Uganda?
