TLDR: my toe got cut during a pedicure, should I ask for money back?
Longer details I’ve been going to the same nail place for several years. It’s an "upscale" place. I chose it because it’s woman owned, they don’t use "chemicals" and it has a nice atmosphere. The owner is there often and I’ve gotten to know her. She is nice, but she definitely runs a "tight ship" for her business and will correct her employees for small things. Fwiw most of the people doing nails are Spanish speaking.
So anyway, my partner and I got a pedicure on Sunday (we got our babysitter so we could have a little date). We paid a little extra for extra leg massage and the total with tip was $202 (my partner paid so I don’t know the exact tip, but I assume it was 20%), so not cheap.
I asked for my nails to be cut short. When she was filling she did accidentally file my skin but it wasn’t a big deal. All yesterday I noticed my toe was hurting. At the end of day I took off my sock and notice there is a slit like cut almost the length of my nail parallel to it, right next to the nail. It was so sore that I ended up not working out last night like I planned. Today it’s feeling better.
So anyway, should I contact and ask for some compensation? I will still probably go there because I really like it, so not sure what is appropriate. I also don’t want to get the worker in trouble :/ But I guess would be a good idea to bring to their awareness? Or should I just let it go since my toe is feeling better today?
Ugh, I’m a weenie, so I probably wouldn’t. BUT you are 100% justified in speaking up! I am not shy about standing up for myself, but something about this type of situation always gets me. I’ll be like oh my hair looks GREAT, and then drive to the nearest salon for a fix!
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus
I get the same type of service, I love a good pedicure. I am so annoyed that you got hurt! I do think it sounds accidental and within the bounds of a normal service. I would not say something or seek compensation. While no one should get any damage from a luxury service, I feel like the lady who runs a tight ship would basically be saying “Don’t make any mistakes!” - not correct something that needs correcting.

I would definitely call and give them an opportunity to make it right. Several years ago I got burned by those hot rocks they use during a massage sometimes, bad enough that I actually blistered. I honestly didn't expect any thing when I called, but I thought that they should be aware that obviously their rocks are too hot. I had several services done that day and they comped them all without me even asking.
That said, the last time I got a pedicure my toenail cracked in half and I passed out LOL I didn't complain, more because I was mortified.
I had something similar happen at my last pedicure, but it was bleeding at the time. The woman apologized. I didn't ask for any compensation. Just figured this sort of thing happens sometimes.
I get nicked at mani/pedis all the time. I wouldn’t say anything. Even at “upscale” places employees are overworked and underpaid. I wouldn’t want to risk whatever repercussions they’d face if I complained.

I don’t think I would say anything or expect compensation unless it was an egregious type situation. My son got nicked at a haircut once on his neck when he was 5 or 6. I wasn’t offered a discount and k still tipped 20%, although I didn’t want to because she was a total jerk about it (he started crying and she made it seem like he was being a drama king over nothing, but he had blood running down his neck and she never apologized to either of us).
I'd let it go but probably take a pic and next time, show the tech and say "btw this happened last time, I just want to make sure it doesn't happen again."
I've been going to the same salon for 10 years and there's a tech I avoid because she would always make at least one of my cuticles bleed. I either make an appointment with someone else or I go on her day off.

Do you still live in Brooklyn?! If so you do not need to subject yourself to getting cut all the time when you get pedicures haha. I can give you some recommendations This is the first time this has happened to me and I go regularly at this place and have been to many others!

Yes I’ve def had the cuticle thing happen once or twice, I def know to look out for the aggressive cuticle cutters haha. Never had a cut on my toe, this is new!

Oh my gosh your poor toenail! I actually had to get a fake one last summer because my nail kept splitting. Like full on acrylic tip on my toe. rachers do you remember that? I thought it was hilarious.

If you get nicked all the time you should find a new place! That's not normal.

I got a pedicure where the tech went a little too HAM with the callus file and I had to put a bandaid and bacitracin on the back of my heel for a couple of days. I thought "damn I know I have sloth feet after the winter but that was intense" 😂

I had a pretty awful pedicure injury about 6 years ago that caused most of my toenails to fall off - the technician pulled off the old polish rather than soaking it off and it caused me to get blisters under all my nails. I ended up going to a podiatrist who drained them.
All I did was tell the nail salon about my injury and to suggest to the manager that the techs might want to change their practice. It worked because every time I have seen someone get a pedicure, they soak the polish off.
And yes, they did compensate me without me even asking.
I recall reading a long time ago that they always stick the new technicians with doing the pedicures. I would guess the person was new. I don't know if I'd complain but I probably wouldn't go back.
It sounds like this was caused by the file? New files can cause papercut like cuts. If it didn't bleed they might not have even realized it happened.
I use to work at a nail salon and when pulling out new files they would always rub them back and forth to wear the edge down a little so it wouldn't happen.
I wouldn't say anything. It wasn't really due to doing anything wrong necessarily, similar to how a paper cut is just the paper hitting you just the right way.

lol this isn't true. If your a tech it's just part of what you do. When I worked at the salon they enjoyed pedicures because they would say it was satisfying lol.
Unless a doctor's appointment was warranted (infection, needed stitches, etc), I'd probably let it go. Maybe tell the owner what happened. I don't think anything beyond a free pedicure would be required.

No I don’t think it was the file. It’s kind of deep and a very straight line parallel to my toe nail. Not sure how to describe it, but def not from the file.

hmmm I mean it sounds like the type of cuts I've gotten from a file 🤷♀️ not from the rough part scraping but the very edge cutting into skin. I was the practice person for all the newbies in exchange for free services so ive had my fair share of mani/Pedi related injuries lol. But I hope it heals up quickly! Stuff on the feet can have such an impact that you don't realize how used those areas are until they're in pain.
