Saw a Biden ad last night featuring a couple going through a memory box from their pregnancy loss, with captions about how she miscarried but couldn't get an abortion, so was sent home until she became septic, almost died twice and may never be able to get pregnant again. It ends with "Trump did this."
I'm almost 14 years out from my loss (how has it been that long??) and it still brought me to tears. I wasn't expecting such a pointed ad.
I get that they want to drive the point home, but .... this was already going to be a very painful election for a lot of people. This piles on the pain.
I guess I'm just posting for awareness, so others aren't caught as off-guard as I was.
I’m sorry that was hard for you. I saw the ad too and having never experienced a pregnancy loss it was still a tough one.
I know why they did it but I’m not sure it’ll be effective. Those of us who have any empathy at all have already heard the stories and are on their side. The rest don’t give a shit about others and their experiences and it isn’t going to change anyone’s mind.

My best friend sent me this ad with a warning so I wouldn't be blindsided by it.
I remember at the time I was so glad to be in FL where I could get an abortion when I needed it, rather than other states where I had previously lived where restrictions were much earlier (and as it was, I barely made it in time).
So much went to shit so quickly in that state, it scares me about just about any other place I live.

everyone here knew for years that designating an embryo as life would completely shut down IVF. And yet, a few months ago that became reality and we watched how quickly so many people turned on a dime? I really think the right has its head in the sand and ‘abortion’ is anything a teen mom or BIPOC person needs but anything they need shouldn’t count. In all those stories you read there is always someone in the equation who never thought this could apply to them/their daughter/etc, .

I agree with fernweh -- there are already stories on the news and on social media of women being denied abortions in cases like these. They either don't believe them, or think the doctors are exaggerating, or the lawyers are being purposely obtuse.

I disagree. From a political standpoint the democrats know abortion bans are unpopular and get people to the polls. Biden is not everyone’s favorite and I think some people are considering not voting and staying home and there are still some true independents who aren’t sold on voting for Biden. Abortion can be an issue that sways those people. Obviously these ads aren’t aimed towards far right antis.

This is fair. The far right is so loud sometimes I forget the moderates/independents exist.

I disagree too. There are a lot of people out there who don’t really pay attention to politics or the details. I’ve seen that ad too and it’s heartbreaking. But I really think the message needs to get out.

I rarely get political ads, and when I do they're from some random district with a fb presence. Is it so emotional that people might mute it or change the channel like the sarah mclaughlin ads for spca? But, if so, won't they already be siding with pro-choice? Or is this one of those things that people don't realize how far reaching into every day lives these bans have been?
Truly, I think there are many who don't realize these bans affect very much wanted pregnancies, too, and have absorbed the far right demonization of abortion as birth control abused by wanton ladies. They can gasp "oh, I would never" until they realize that yes, they very much would. I really do think that many don't realize the details. They remain ignorant in their churchy cocoons, content to judge away someone who might be sitting right next to them. But is this ad effective in that messaging?

When Chrissy Teigan lost her pregnancy and explained what she had was an abortion she received so much shit for using the word wrong.
No, she was correct in calling it what it was. One of my local radio personalities called her out on air because of it. And even though she has been awful with so many things in her life, I greatly appreciated her honesty regarding what happened.
Ads like the new Biden one are important because people still do not understand what abortion care is.

Way back in my college days, this would not have swayed any anti. They would tell me that a mom dying was god's will, and who am I trying to prevent. I was just a girl who suffered from losing a mom, unrelated to pregnancy, but fully aware this was an awful fate. They don't care about the woman, either.
I just watched the video, and I don't think it will change anyone's mind. I don't think it will do anything positive or negative, either. If you're still neutral (how can you be?!), there's no 30 second spot that will change it.
Women and the men who support them have made up their minds, for better or for worse. The goal is getting the people who support bodily autonomy to the polls, and I'm not sure this will do that. But I also don't think it will cause harm.

I beg to differ. Maybe not at the polls, but it's still harmful to people dealing with grief around pregnancy loss.

Yep, like my Mom who said "maybe it's just because I'm old and so abortion doesn't apply to me anymore that I just am not riled up about this". Uhhmmm, I quickly reminded her she has 2 granddaughters that she says she loves and she just looked at me like I'd hit her. People just aren't always thinking and some need shaking out of their "this doesn't affect me" bubbles.

I am in a mood that medical care needs to be back in the hands of medical professionals. This is a great example of it. She was right.
Everyone else needs to get their hands out of healthcare and the only way to remove politicians is through votes. So these ads need to air.

I totally agree with you. But I’m sorry these ads bring people such pain and that we need them at all. I’m in Florida and I know people are speculating that our reason court decisions will drive people to the polls, I have no faith in these mf-ers.

I agree with this. And I admire anyone who shares their abortion story. This is not a knock at Chrissy Teigan or this ad but I do think it also plays in to the "right reason" for an abortion narrative which I think is problematic, overall. Even on these boards I’ve seen people say "well no one has an abortion at 20 weeks casually" or "no one is having 10 abortions" when both of those statements are false. For ads and journalist often the "sad" abortion story is often what people focus on when in fact those aren’t the most common reason people have abortions. There isn’t going to be an ad about someone who is 20 weeks having their 4th abortion because they didn’t want to use condoms or any other contraceptive method. At the end of the day, people should be able to have abortions whenever they want for whatever reasons they want without shame or judgement.

You are correct, and I'm sorry for not elaborating that I meant politically.
