What clothing are you buying your tween boys? All athletic wear? Mine doesn’t care what he wears as long as it’s comfortable but when I shop the boys dept at Target the graphic tees seem too young for him now but men’s sizes are still a bit too big.
All soft pants or athletic shorts. T shirts, sports jerseys, hoodies, t shirts with place names or sports teams on them. He doesn’t wear graphic tees per se.
Most of his clothes come from Amazon because he won’t go shopping, but can tolerate sitting at the computer with me for 3 minutes to grunt approval. He mostly only wears plain black or gray clothes though so it’s fairly straightforward. He has generally been unwilling to wear graphic tees, outside of military shirts (his dad is retired Army and he wants to join to Air Force so he has some AF shirts and Army shirts) for 3 or 4 years now.

My 14 year old freshman still wears all athletic shorts and pants, and plain/solid-ish athletic tshirts (no long sleeves, only short sleeves, no matter the weather). He doesn't mind if the shirts have a colored trim on it or like a line of other color near the sleeves or something, but he doesn't like any writing or graphics on the shirts. Oh, and I guess some ombre or 'splattered' shirts are ok, but again, no writing or graphics lol. I mostly get his shirts at Old Navy and Kohls (he likes the Tek Gear there).
All athletic wear- Nike, adidas, under armor, or middle school hoodies/sweat pants. He has one pair of Dickies black slacks for “dress up” but everything else is sportswear. He’ll also wear billabong and Hurley and other surf brands but all casual t shirts/athletic shorts.
My ten-year-old wears exclusively athletic clothing. Mostly gym shorts, dri-fit tees, hoodies, and crocs. If he needs sneakers he wears Adidas Sambas or Nike AF1s/dunks/whatever. “Running shoe” type sneakers are out. From what I can gather, the “good”brands for shoes and shirts are Nike and Adidas. Occasionally UA is okay. For shorts it doesn’t seem to matter as much.
ETA: when I can get him to wear pants, it’s generally joggers. Target has good ones. No hard pants. Occasionally he’ll grumble and wear the stretchy sweatpant jeans with a drawstring, but he is very angry about it.
I shop second as much as possible, but we have good thrift stores close by. My second choice is Winners (Canadian TJ Maxx). I was recently in the states and bought a bunch of stuff from Sam's Club. They had really nice Hurley shorts and t-shirts that fit DS really and were cheap, even with the currency conversion. I also bought a few things at Dick's and Kohls from the clearance racks. Their regular prices are too much, but the sales were better than I typically find in Canada.
We do have a couple pairs of jeans and button up shirts which is as dressy as it gets in our house for DS. He has agreed to tolerate the handful of times a year I require him to "dress up" in exchange for me not commenting on his daily attire. (She says as she sends her son back for a "nice" pair of shorts and not the stained, too short version he initially chose.)
My kid is almost 10, so a bit younger, but he’s 100% athletic gear.
The majority of it comes from Costco - whatever athletic shirts and shorts they have, or shirts he’s gotten his sports, or pro sports shirts. When it’s cold, he wears compression pants and shirts underneath (similar to under armor but I get a generic brand in bigger packs on Amazon).
He’s very anti-jeans. He will willingly wear khaki-looking pants as long as they feel like athletic pants.

He has a pretty strict dress code at school so wears navy or black sweatpants with a white collared shirt most days. I hate it but he’s comfortable. On weekends he wears sweatpants and t-shirts if we don’t have plans. If we go to dinner or visit my family he wears jeans and a hoodie or button down shirt. School clothes are old navy. Weekend clothes are mostly Zara. He’s tall but very skinny. We have trouble finding pants that are long enough with a big enough waist.
DS (10) likes shirts from surf shops like quicksilver and o'neil. He also likes band themed shirts for bands he listens to and shirts from activities he does (like swim). Oh and shirts w/funny sayings and pics.
Bottoms are mostly athletic joggers though he will still wear the elastic waist jeans from Carters.
Fortunately we have school uniforms so I don't have to deal with this on a daily basis! He wears either athletic clothes, tshirts from different swim competitions/teams/countries, and occasionally retro style graphic tshirts which he finds on ebay.
Athletic stuff 24/7, no interest in wearing jeans or anything he deems uncomfortable. He just asked me to buy him Crocs. Tries to wear athletic shorts and slides regardless of the weather.

The graphic tees he wears are sports brands like Nike/ Adidas, his favorite sports teams and maybe a couple video game shirts. He likes plain or subtle pattern/ color dri-fit shirts. You can find these at places like TJ Maxx and I find a lot of Sports team stuff used on Mercari in good condition because kids that age grow out of stuff so quickly. Places like Target and ON / Gap have size 14-16 and 18, although 18 gets close to a men’s small and sizing varies a lot by brand.
He’s another tween who only wants to wear shorts and t-shirts. If it’s really cold he’ll wear athletic pants and a hoodie. We live somewhere warm though and he’s never worn jeans much. He has some nicer material but still elastic waist shorts (like hybrid swim shorts) and some button down short sleeve shirts if he really needs to be dressier.
He did cotillion, which is like an etiquette course, and had to wear dress pants, dress shirt, belt, nice shoes and occasionally a tie and jacket. He acted like it was torture but I’m glad he had to do it. I think all of us post covid are not used to dressing up much and my kids rarely have to anymore.

My 11yo has never owned a pair of jeans. I didn't really think toddlers belonged in jeans and now he'd never wear them.
Some Target graphic tees are OK but I need him to OK the graphics because some are just too juvenile and it's hard to know what he'll like. I've done well with the athletic assortment at Target, TJ Maxx, and the sets at Costco.
My almost 11yo is basically in some version of Under Armour/Nike/whatever athletic/sweat pants he can find. And then random t-shirts and hoodies, usually from a hockey tournament or something. He doesn't seem to have much of a preference for brands or anything yet.
Occasionally he'll do jeans and a button down flannel, but it's a rare occurrence.
12yo.... pretty much a hoodie and elastic waisted pants every day. He will do athletic shorts and tshirt when its warmer. It's a struggle to get him to wear jeans or khakis if its a dressier event. He doesn't care that much about what is on the tshirt - he has a mix of old navy tshirts and shirts from sports teams/tournaments. A lot of his bottoms are old navy or under armor. I usually shop the outlets or sierra. I sometimes get lucky at consignment sales, but finding older boy clothes that are in good shape is hard to come by, lol
This was a tough stage for us. Now my DS is into men’s sizes. Like everyone else, pretty much all he wears his sports-type stuff. Adidas comes in larger boys’ sizes and we also had some luck at old navy when cat and jack was too babyish, but he didn’t fit in men’s yet.
My 12 yr old will only wear athletic clothing... hoodies, shorts. I mostly shop at Dick's for him now and occasionally find things at TJ Maxx in Nike, UA etc. He really only likes to wear specific sports teams shirts or Jordan stuff. He won't wear graphic T's from Target, Old Navy anymore. Forget dressing up! He recently had to dress up on Easter and we realized he barely has anything nicer that fits lol
All sportswear, all the time! He has a number of soccer and baseball jerseys/shirts that he rotates through, same with shorts. He's decided he hates most cotton t-shirts which is fun (not).
DS is 11 and he wears a mix, depending on activity.
About half the weeks he's in jeans and a cotton t-shirt. Either generic solid colored, color blocked, or something graphic like Vineyard Vines. He likes solid colors, and when it comes to shirts with jeans, he's pretty selective if there are graphics. VV has become a go-to for him because they're soft, and nautical. (We live on the coast.) He'll wear this outfit when playing outside in the woods, at marine biology class, hiking, when he plans to get dirty, or when he wants to look put together. Sometimes the jeans are replaced with a khaki jean, or actual khakis.
The rest of the time he's lounging inside (homeschool) or at a physical activity/playing sports outside in joggers/athletic shorts and a soccer jersey.
He's been selecting his own outfits for a good few years now, and selects his outfit based on what he'll be doing. Sometimes he'll change during the day. I try to get him to re-wear clothing that's only been worn briefly if it's not been worn while sweaty, etc. But I really try not to get on his case about outfit changes when he seems to look put together most of the time. LOL. That benefit outweighs the extra laundry.

My DS is 14, but his attire hasn't changed since he was 11-12, ha ha. Athletic shorts or sweatpants, depending on the season, plus a t-shirt and sweatshirt. Usually plain shorts or tees from Old Navy, and Nike/Adidas/Under Armour sweatshirts and sweatpants. He also wears sweatshirts and tees from school sports teams he's been on.

It only gets worse as they get older as far as options. Girls and women have so many choices but buying for my DS is like athletic gear is the only option.
If they just won't wear jeans, you could try REI or another backcountry store. Some of the outdoor gear is a little more presentable than athletic wear.
