How is it working out for you? I don't have a tv in my main living area, so the main tv is in my finished basement. I want to move things around down there to make room for a pool table, but the only configuration that really makes sense is the couch facing the fireplace and putting the tv there. Technically it is a wood burning fireplace but I've never used it and likely never will. I'm not generally a fan of tv's over fireplaces, but since this is a much more casual space, I'm kind of warming up to the idea. The only issue is that it's higher than I'd like and I only have so much space to back up the couch. Since this is my main tv watching area, I'm wondering what kind of options there are. I'd also love to know from people that live with this kind of set up how it has worked out for you and if you've done anything that helps make it work better. Thanks.
We've always had a TV above the fireplace and never thought twice about it. It may not be the "right" design choice, but it's functional for our family and our layouts, so we went with it.
Highly recommend getting a wall mount with tilt ability so you can angle it down a bit. We had this at our old house and liked it. The new house doesn't have it, but it's not a huge difference. If you have or can get a couch that reclines even the tiniest bit, even better. (Our couches in the living room don't do a true recline, so you could back them up against the wall if you needed to without any issues.)
I don’t have this setup (the tv would end up higher than I’d like), but if you do it keep in mind that you will likely never be able to use that fireplace as the heat a wood fire would create will wreck your tv (and also be unsafe from an electronics standpoint). It’s generally fine with a gas fireplace but not with a wood-burning one.
If you decide to install the TV over the fireplace, I recommend installing it with a pull-down TV mount. We installed one over our fireplace, and it allows us to lower the TV by two feet when in use, providing a comfortable viewing height. We have had ours for over a year and love it!

I was looking at those and was wondering if they were worth the price. Good to know. Thanks.

I wish we had put in the pull down mount because my head hurts at times watching it for too long over the fireplace. I honestly may ask my H if we can do that in the future (summer).

We recently put a TV over the fireplace - we don't watch that TV often, but I like having it when the main TV is being used and I don't want to watch my ipad or in my bedroom. I think it's fine - but will admit that it's a bit high. the living room was still in transition - so not fully put together in this image - but this is what ours looks like with our couch if it helps.
We have our TV over our fireplace because there is no other option. I hate it. Even with a tilt, it is too high. Our long term solution is going to be removing the gas fireplace, adding shallow lower cabinets, and shelves up the sides to create a built-in, which will allow us to lower our tv to an appropriate height.
I would recommend! It works well for us. Due to laziness, we tend to keep the tv down over the fireplace most of the time. But it's nice that we can put it up when guests come over.
We have ours over the fireplace and no complaints. It’s a bit higher than ideal but I honestly don’t notice/doesn’t bother us. Our main TV area is in the basement so my major issue is how it looks in our more “formal” area - I wish there wasn’t a tv at all to be honest. I really wanted the Frame TV (I looove them in my friends houses) but DH is very into things like appropriate surround sound and having weird side speakers on the TV so it didn’t work. Whomp whomp.
It’s a gas fireplace that gives off great heat and we use all the time with no issues. We did use a professional company to install everything
