Gen Alpha is fucked. Millennials like to complain about how bad it is for them, but their kids are going to have it much worse as we careen towards the end of life as we know it.

I can personally attest to how financially devastating natural disasters are and how different it when a small neighborhood is impacted versus an entire city.
I just finished reading The Sum of Us and this is one of the topics that is addressed in the book.
This is part of why I find it so frustrating that some always get stuck on "but those options cost more" and how that makes them non accessible to lower income folks when we start talking about ways to lower our personal impacts as if that's a reason for the average person on this board ain't fucking poor to not make lifestyle changes. Or even on the corporate level, oh man, that's going to make prices go up tho. PRICES ARE GOING TO GO UP REGARDLESS and it's going to suck the most for people who DONT' make much money.
“We have clear evidence that overall, the poor are harmed more,” he said. “That’s what’s likely to happen from the global warming that’s already occurred and what’s likely to happen even for small increments of global warming.” ..... Food prices are also seen rising by an estimated $33,000 over the lifetime of a 2024 baby, due to disruptions to agriculture and supply chains, the paper said. Other expenses, like energy, transportation and health care, are expected to balloon in the next few decades, as well.
But tell me again how it's so expensive to buy local produce or live somewhere walkable. Or that it costs too much to build trains. Or whatever it is. Like, we're spending the money either way. It's just getting lit on fire if we don't spend it trying to mitigate these impacts.

Just gonna add this here because it feels related: wapo.st/3JnJmGI
Northern Virginia serves as the world’s internet hub. Its neighbors are paying a price. Data centers in Virginia that process nearly 70 percent of global digital traffic need more electricity. Coal-fired power plants in neighboring states are going to provide it.

Thank you for the article. It feels like we are in free fall.
A friend is considering a degree in Homeland Security from a local state university. When meeting professors they were told a future career in Homeland Security will be focused on disaster management due to climate change.

Recently the majority of MH's jobs have been for cooling for data centers in VA. Cooling systems need liquid that doesn't freeze, which means petroleum products. Hundreds of thousands of gallons of them! It's disgusting to think about.
