Putting down sick or overly aggressive animals is par for the course for homesteaders and farmers, and Noem — who is on the shortlist to be Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick — writes that she included the story about Cricket to show that she’s willing to do anything “difficult, messy and ugly” if required, per The Guardian.
I was horrified when I read this. It sounds like she killed that poor dog for being an untrained puppy (her fault not the dogs obviously). It sounds like she is getting a lot of backlash even from republicans so hopefully this is the end of her political career.
I was in the vet’s office yesterday and another pet owner was telling me about this. For the record, I didn’t ask she was randomly telling me about animal deaths for no reason with no filter. But yes it did sound like she didn’t train the dog and then shot it since it was just a puppy. That kind of behavior from a puppy would be out of the norm so my other thought was get the puppy tested for diseases.
I think what's really weird about those stories (beyond the obvious) is how she expresses this personal emotional animosity toward both animals. She hates the dog. The goat is musty and gross. Like...what the fuck is with that?
I grew up on a little farmette with animals. I have a superficially similar story to the goat thing...but like...not actually? I'm not proud of the time we had to kill a rooster for repeatedly trying to murder me. I don't think it proves anything other than that we failed to figure out what the fuck was wrong with this one rooster. And like...even from a sympathetic POV - who tries to kill a full grown male goat with a shotgun apparently loaded with something not even close to powerful enough?? Do you not own a rifle?? headshot. be done. Jesus.
Even if you're also a republican farm/ranch/livestock person who thinks it's reasonable to kill a dog out back because it's a livestock killer, i dont see how you don't read the story of her killing a goat in a snit, mad that it knocks down her kids (err...tell them to keep out of the goat pen?) with an underpowered firearm and not ALSO just find that off-putting. Can't even kill a goat right and seems surprised that a big male goat smells funky. She comes off as dumb and vindictive.
Also lols forever that a dog is inherently dangerous if it kills chickens. A dog that'll kill like...a sheep? that's a little scary. But chickens? I mean, doesn't sound like a viable pointer hunting dog for sure. Wrong instincts. (Also how did this dog you don't trust and are trying to rehab get into your neighbors chickens?? were you perhaps, not paying attention???) But regardless I've known plenty of friendly family dogs who will kill a chicken in a HEARTBEAT given the opportunity because chickens are basically mobile squeaky toys from a dog POV. My cousin's dog killed my granny's favorite hen one thanksgiving and nobody in the family was ever allowed to forget it, but Marcus still slept in my cousin's bed.
She’s back pedaling now. I’ve seen some of the excerpts from the book and it seems like she was bragging, heartless and not apologetic (hmmm, traits that are common with lots of Republicans). The dog was only 14 months old and a hunting dog that obviously needed training. I wonder what she told her children and what they think of it now. She wants to be VP and it’s horrifying to me she’s already Governor of a state. She is a complete idiot for bragging about animal abuse in her memoir because I feel like society as a whole abhors that more than anything else (even crimes against humans, sadly). I think the Cheeto family may even be smart enough to not do something like that.

Yes to this - my dogs are the biggest, cuddliest, sweetest babies on the planet. I trust them completely with my family and though we don’t have children I do trust them with other peoples children.
That said they are still animals with instincts and a prey drive. They have killed a number of animals- thankful no neighbor chickens but groundhogs, squirrels, and a number of others that come into our backyard are definitely at risk.
So she was telling the awful truth about her dog but lying about other things? The publisher said they will correct the lies about meeting world leaders if there’s no proof it happened. The dog info came from advanced copies of the book given to the media.
My dad is deaf-at the time of this had a hearing aid(was not wearing bc of the farm work). We were at my grandparents helping pick corn. He was driving the grain cart and billy goat was following him stinking up the farmyard. My dad thought the tractor was on fire!! Jumped off that thing so fast to only be face to face with smelly billy goat. No billy goat was harmed in this story.
My younger beagle was let loose as a stray because she was deemed a shitty hunter by her owner and I thought that was bad, but this? This is despicable.
My "failed" hunter is the snuggliest sweetest little girl who just likes to lick and kiss and chase animals she never catches. Except a bird. And an already dead chipmunk. LOL
There are no excuses for what she did. And I totally understand that farmers are used to putting animals down, but in this instance it was cruel and unnecessary.

May she be treated in the afterlife how she has treated her animals, over and over again. Fuck her.
Also? My 9 lb Havanese caught a baby bird that was just learning to fly in our back yard (so yeah, perfect little squeaky toy in his eyes). H saw it happen, told him to 'drop,' which he grudgingly did, but the idea that he's inherently dangerous because he nearly killed another tiny animal? yeah, no. This woman should never be allowed to have supervision of so much as a mealworm.
This is the same awful human being who said 2 weeks ago on CNN about abortions in the case of rape or incest - "I just don't believe a tragedy should perpetuate another tragedy."

The poor kid got off the bus and asked for Cricket. That does not sound like an unloved family dog. She said in one sentence the dog was full of joy and in the next that she hated it.
She does have a few of the usual awful suspects defending her. Guns rights types and rah, this is real murca, but it's probably the most united we've been since 9/11 in denouncing this.

So many people think animal-on-animal aggression equals animal-on-people aggression. (I don't for one minute believe that she thought the dog was a threat to her family)

I don't think it always means anything, but I do have serious concerns when they attack animals larger than typical children.
I did try to get Animal Control to pick up some feral dogs that attacked my 90 lb dog but they didn't think they were a real threat.
This being said I would never kill an untrained dog. I currently have one with severe anxiety and I just keep him separated.

They are separate behaviors. I had to have a foster dog euthanized for severe aggression to other dogs — he would go for their throats and not let go. He tried to kill my resident dog.
Alone, he was a cuddly lap dog and loved kids. But it was too much of a risk to adopt him out.

I had a dog aggressive dog who I trusted with human babies but could not allow around other dogs EVER. Fine with cats. And horses. And humans galore but dogs were a hard no.
Gov. Noem continues to do interviews promoting the book. Questions about meeting “world leaders” are being challenged - twice, she wrote that she met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. She did not. She refuses to answer direct questions about why and how she made the mistake/lie as she only repeats over & over “… errors brought to her attention have been corrected in future publications”. The relentless dodging of direct questions makes her look like a fool.
When pressed, she takes a swing at the fake media. And Biden.

Oh, the irony.
She's a cruel lying liar who lies, running for VP. This tracks.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
There’s a vicious, untrainable animal in this anecdote and it’s not the dog. Seriously though, this is an illustration of such small minded thinking! Someone whose judgment is so clouded by shortsightedness, she can’t find obvious solutions. It shows a huge weakness and does the exact opposite of what she’s trying to accomplish. Unless the goal was actually to demonstrate her cruelty. In which case, mission accomplished?

my dog would regularly break out of her fenced in yard and go over to the neighbors across the way and kill the chickens. She would bring them back and leave them on our front door as a gift for us, lol.

Blaming the fake media when it’s literally quotes from her that she wrote about her own life. 😂
So... this is very much normal for middle of nowhere rural America. Chicken killing dogs don't get very many chances, if any, as the rural lore is that once they start killing chickens they won't stop. It's common to try to train the dog to not kill chickens by tying a dead chicken around the dog's neck, and if that doesn't work you put the dog down. Nuisance animals get the same treatment, aka kill it and move on. I'm not at all surprised she included this in her book as she probably didn't think it was wrong.
Obviously the dog stuff is crap. Dogs are trainable, and failings for the dog fall squarely on the owners shoulders.
