I like audio books for flights. I recently listened to Horse and though it was pretty good. I just finished This Tender Land and loved 90% of it.

I’m an anxious flyer, so I like lighthearted stuff while traveling. We’ve rewatched Eurovision - Fire Saga on a long flight, and I just finished up rewatching the series Shrinking while commuting back and forth for work.

If you’re into more fast paced stuff, we just watched Argylle last weekend and thought it was way more fun than the reviews made it out to be.

Jealous of anyone that sleeps on a plane-no amount of drugs, booze, or even fancy lay flat seats has helped me.

My last 16 hour flight I watched all 3 Lord of the Rings movies, that knocked out most of the flight.

I watched a movie called "Gifted" on my last international flight and it was so good.
I just flip through and watch whatever I'm in the mood for.

On my 8 hour flights I watched the Marvels movie- there was a couple of things crashing which if you are a nervous flier, but that scene was over quickly. On the way back, I watched Emma and Barbie and watched a TV series called Person of Interest. The kids were watching the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

I just watched something from in flight entertainment when we went to Australia.

We had an overnight there so I had wine with dinner and then took a Tylenol PM about a hour later.

Last time I went to Australia, someone nearby watched Schindler's List, which would not be my top choice. I personally like to watch TV shows so you can zone in and out.

For me, it's a combo of some wine and my prescribed sleep meds, not ambien (learned the hard way) and wine. I load up my laptop with seasons of shows I've seen before, like house or L&O, so if I doze off, nbd. A few books on my kindle app. I use my noise cancelling headphones regardless if I'm listening to something or not. It's been awhile since I've had a single flight that long, but overall travel time is often in excess of 20 hours. The last trip back to the states was around 50. That's a lot of time to burn, and you get sick of every single option you thought to prepare, so variety is necessary.

I’ve gotten on a kick where I watch Anthony Bourdain episodes on the Delta in-flight app. Not related to your post but there are a shockingly high number of times he foreshadowed his own death. Most recently, I watched an episode about Cambodia where someone gave him a traditional Cambodian well-wish of “May you live to be 100” and he instantly replied “Oh, I don’t think I would want to live that long.” The episode was probably 10-15 years old.He made frequent comments like that…so hard to watch in hindsight.

Be careful if your headphones get uncomfortable after a few hours. You might want a couple types on hand.

For night flights, I do a movie with dinner then attempt sleep even though I usually only get maybe a few 5 minute naps. On day flights, I'll watch a bunch of movies. I like ending with musicals, like Eras. Back in 2008, we binged half a season of 24 (the tv show).

Daytime flight - I do a mix of books (Kindle) and movies, along with making sure I get up and walk the aisle a few times.

Nighttime flight - eat dinner, have a drink, watch a movie and then cat nap until I can't stand doing it, then watch another movie. I definitely cannot sleep on a plane.

Once you exceed 8 hours, you need a variety of options to not lose your mind. South Africa is 16 hours from the East coast and although I’ve done it many times to visit family, it’s still something I dread.

-With sleep meds, you might spend 8 hours sleeping
-Factor 2 hours for meals

That’s 10 hours, but there’s still another 6 to go:
-These flights usually have a lot of movie/ tv choices but I would bring my own pre-loaded device on the off-chance that your in-flight video doesn’t work
-Some kind of light reading that doesn’t require too much focus
-At some point these super long flights turn into social time, especially when the lights are back on and breakfast has been cleared away…but there’s STILL several more hours of flight time left. people start talking to their neighbors about travel plans.

Don’t forget to stand up and wiggle your toes regularly. Also drink lots of water and avoid alcohol. Dehydration on these long flights is no joke.

I’m a nervous flyer so I read/watch fluff on flights & ideally sleep as much as I can. I also journal what we did on the trip on the way home. It’s so hard to remember years later all the details so I like to put down memories when it’s fresh.

I started binging the Smartless podcast on my 4 hour drives to my son’s school. Each one is about an hour and it interviews a famous guest. It’s light, funny and I really enjoyed it. Worth a try for something other than reading or movies.
