So, this past few days has been amazing in some ways. On Thursday, the nation were asked to vote in Mayoral and Council elections. And there were a few shockers. The best thing about it all? The Tories lost almost 400 seats!!!! Some of those seats had been in the Tories hands for decades and were considered "safe". And London's mayor was elected for an unprecedented 3rd term despite the massive racism and push back around taxes for those driving the more polluting vehicles and the shutting down of streets to motorised vehicles make them healthier and safer. It's a HUGE blow to the Tories and I really, really, really hope it means that when the bigger elections happen (MPs - which is also the election of the Prime Minister), the Tories get blown out of the water, as they deserve.
On 2 May, 107 English councils held elections with more than 2,000 seats being contested. Some were for metropolitan boroughs such as Manchester city council and others for unitary authorities such as Bristol or Dorset. Both structures are single-tier authorities with responsibility for the whole range of council services, including education, social care, rubbish collection and parks.
There were elections for 58 district councils, lower-tier authorities whose responsibilities are more limited, but include planning, housing and recycling. District councils typically elect a third of their seats each year on a four-yearly cycle, and elect the upper tier council — usually the county council — in the fourth year.
There were elections in London for the London assembly as well as 11 mayors including those of London, greater Manchester and Liverpool. These were subject to changes in their voting system since the last time they were up for election. They are now elected on a first past the post basis. Police and crime commissioners were also up for election.
That’s good news! How does the election cycle work over there?
It's so weird. So very, very weird.
General Elections - they take place at least every 5 years. (yes, at least) They can be called earlier by the ruling party (the party who has the most power and the Prime Minister), so you might go 5 years or you could go 1 year. You do not vote for a Prime Minister (PM)- you vote for your MPs (Members of Parliament). The party with the most votes (in a weird, first past the post system) gets to choose who their leader, the PM, will be. This is why we've had several PMs cycle through since our last election - they can decide to remove someone/or the person can step down and then choose someone we didn't elect. I hate it as we've been stuck with several people very few people would have voted for.
Local Government - takes place every 4 years; this will be local councillors
Mayor & Assembly - takes place very 4 years (usually not at the same time as the local gov't). The Mayor of London makes decisions on behalf of the people of London. The 25 London Assembly Members make sure the Mayor’s decisions are in the interests of the public. You vote once for your constituency member and once for a London-wide representative.

Am I right in thinking that you have a general election this year but still aren't sure exactly when it will be held? But that there's a rough estimate of late summer early fall?
At least you don't have to deal with never-ending campaign season. Soooo much money wasted. And just like I won't miss a chance to blame Reagan, I won't miss a chance to say fuck citizens united.

I think the general election is next year unless one is called early.

Yup - the latest it can be held is 28 January 2025. The problem here is that Sunak keeps saying, perhaps in a few months, perhaps in a few months, then says, nope. So, it feels like never ending campaigning in a different sort of way.

I knew it wasn't scheduled like the way it's in our constitution. So, it could possibly be next month or possibly be 8 months? What's the prevailing sentiment? I guess that's where I got the late summer early august sentiment from.

The latest sentiment is that this gov't is fucked so they will likely keep saying it's one date and then push it back and keep doing that until they have to have an election. They keep thinking they are going to get a 'win' with the idiotic public but so far things are going downhill so far and so fast that even the racists are thinking the Tories are shite and they probably won't even vote. What is even more idiotic is that the even farther right wing section of this party is pushing to get Sunak out and put someone new in, but there isn't anyone who the party would be able to vote in (it would not go to the public for a vote, it's internal). They have not a single person who they can push forward because all the even close to moderate people have left the party (either left politics, went to Labour or became another party).
