Bad weather is predicted so school canceled aftercare at the last minute. Fortunately my boss understands, but what about other people who might not have that flexibility? The weathers been forecasted all week, surely they could have planned this earlier.
I got the most beautiful photo of a deer this morning it looks photoshopped. I've run into this family of deer before on my hikes and while the other deer run away, this one smaller deer always stays and stares at me, lol. It's so adorable and sweet so I finally went ahead and took photos. Then toward the end of my hike I ran into a copperhead and got the fuck out of there, lol.
If your library was having a learn to crochet meet up at 3 pm on a weekday tagged as for adults, teens and seniors but also as “afterschool” (and “arts and crafts”) would you think it actually was open for adults? Or just kids?
I did ask last time I was at the library but it hadn’t started yet (it’s weekly) and whoever was in the branch that day didn’t know.
I don’t want to put on real clothes if it is just going to be 12 year olds and me!
I would think it was open for adults, but would MOSTLY be attended by tweens/teens. I would hope they would be welcoming to anyone who wanted to learn to crochet/practice, but as this is dd's new favorite hobby, I have since noticed how popular it is with her age group, so I would be prepared to possibly be the only adult there.
My library does stuff like this and it drives me nuts because it's always in the work day. "Game night for grown ups!"...at 1 PM. Trust me I get it's super hard to find someone to teach crochet or knitting lessons as I can't find anyone IRL, but most adults work at 3 PM. Agree most schools aren't out early enough for tweens to get there either.
tacokick, I have limited crochet skills, but taught myself granny square on Youtube. I make granny square blankets for a local cat shelter, and made one giant granny square baby blanket. It's one of those things that *should* be that easy.
tacokick, I don't remember which YT video I used to get started, but this one seems easy to follow www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvjeEMjm3Mw. You can start with small squares that are easy to rip out. I forget what the brand is called now, but it used to be Sugar and Cream. They make 100% cotton yarn that my old crafting group would use to make face cloths to donate. They recommended trying different patterns like a granny square in face cloth form. You get practice, and a quick and easy project in the end.
That reminds me I was watching "Rock the Block" (HGTV) last night and one of the challenges required a theme for a bonus room including an option for "Social Media Studio". I thought that was silly/HGTV thing, but thinking about the video I just posted I guess you actually have to have at least a dedicated corner with good lighting, no clutter, a mic (if applicable) etc. Seems like a lot of work, lol.

The middle school is a block away and I almost feel they get almost get out too early for it to be aimed at them. Their dismissal is at 2 pm so waiting until 3 for a club at the library seems like a lot of dead time? And then the closest high schools get out at 3 or later. And adults work. Who is this for??
I think I might wait out this week and call for details and try to go next week.

Thank you for the link! I cleared my schedule a bit since my dad is in the hospital and I’m desperate for a distraction. I even think I have some of that yarn leftover from a weaving demo.
I wish I had a social media studio! Our house is so dark and small and some times I need to make short videos or photos for clients and it’s super awkward. I’m jealous of the space some of these crafters have!
You guys, I have found the fountain of youth. The ladies who lunch crowd (at least my mom's) are all well into retirement and think I am a fetus. One of them thought I was IN MY 20s. AMAZING. No need for Botox when everyone has cataracts!
I'm surprised at all the dentists that don't see kids until 3 or 4! Everything we saw/heard, including from the pediatrician and I believe the ADA, recommended seeing a dentist by 12 months or 6 months after the first tooth erupts. For various reasons, we ended up not taking my son until he was about 20 months, and thought we were late. Those of you who went later - how old are your kids? I wonder if recommendations have changed?
At the first appointment, they counted and did a cleaning (not just regular brushing), and confirmed no cavities. They also recommended flossing between some of his front teeth since they are very close together.
That being said, wanderingback , I wouldn't stress about delaying until you can add your daughter via open enrollment!
In my anecdotal experience in talking with other moms, the pediatric dentists want to see them early. The dentists wjo will see kids want them to be old enough to somewhat follow directions - age 3 is what I hear.
Some of our local pediatric dentists will do the first exam for free because they want to get you as a patient so it may be worth calling around. But I think you are probably fine to wait until open enrollment the next time around as well.
This is exactly what my dentist said. He wanted him to be old enough to know what was going on and to listen (somewhat lol). And my dentist really eased DS into things and took a lot of care to make sure that he knew the dentist was not something to be afraid of.
The only pediatric dentist in our area is 45 minutes away and I really only wanted to go there if we had some kind of issue. We were totally fine waiting until 3.

I just got back from the doctors and I have cellulitis that is now almost from my spine to hip. The PA prescribed heavy duty antibiotics and photographed and outlined the area and I have to go back tomorrow for her to recheck. I had taken motrin before going and my temp was 100.2 and she said the bar is low if I feel like I need to head to the er between tonight and when I go back tomorrow. Please send good thoughts it responds! The irony is that 7 years ago today I was released from the hospital after a two night stay for cellulitis in my foot. What are the odds.
Yes! I have a book that has patterns using both terms but I feel like I need a person to tell me what to do. Granny squares seem so square and exact!!
That's about 33% experience in keeping the tension right on the yarn and 66% using a blocking rig to make them all the same.
Should we start a Maryland crochet club? I have been getting into crochet but have no idea what a blocking rig is so I think I have a lot to learn lol.
I am making a blanket and my edges are a mess. It's a forgiving pattern and yarn so I think it's fine, but at some point I need to learn how to do things properly
I didn’t even think about/realize that should add my daughter to dental insurance during open enrollment. So now they say I have to wait. I once had a period with no dental insurance for a few months and I had an appointment scheduled and it was $165 out of pocket, not too bad. Well I just called a pediatric dental practice a friend recommended and it’s $435 for the first visit, yikes. I guess I could call around to see if anywhere else is cheaper. We can afford that but it’s no fun paying for these kind of things lol.
Our dentist charges like $150 for toddler visits without insurance. I think $435 is bananas, even for around here!
I’m paranoid about the dentist, so I’d just pay OOP.

Years ago I volunteered with a group of mostly older ladies. I brought my DH one weekend and they went nuts. He has a job where he wears a uniform, so I think they all thought "oh cute young man in his x uniform". Anyway they were so sweet and included "the newlyweds" (us) in their newsletter.
Glad you got a good boost Oh and your post made me LOL.

It’s my H’s birthday and we spent the day at IKEA (at his request). I then got a work out in and am now enjoying a cocktail with H. This was a great way to spend a day off work!

LOL I'd be in for a crochet/craft meet up! Edges are always a mess until it's washed and dried.
Reading this thread I'm getting mad all over again that Kid 1's first dentist read me the riot act for not bringing them in for their first visit until age 3. They had zero cavities or problems brushing, and he still made me feel like the world's worst mom for waiting that long, even when I explained that our pediatrician had recommended that timing.
My OB/GYN sent me a letter back in Dec that she was retiring, and since my perimenopause symptoms have been in full force that last year, it was a perfect time to research doctors more focused on the end of the fertility spectrum. A few months ago, I found a highly recommended one and FINALLY have my initial consult tomorrow.
I have never been more excited for a dr's appointment in my life.

Being a parent can be gross.
Earlier this week K threw up all over him and me and tonight our girl dog’s collar got stuck in the crate and while she wasn’t choking or anything - just stuck - she totally freaked and expressed her anal glands all over the crate. (She’s totally fine now, but we have thrown away the crate lining and now need to give her a bath. 🤢🤢🤢)

Would you DM where you are going? I need to find a new doctor and I think we live in the same general area.
I keep seeing the Wednesday thread and it's confusing me. So here is Thursday's thread.
I had a conversation about volunteering last night that left me unsettled. We were talking about volunteer opportunities for a group of 11-14 year old girls. The other mom was insistent that the girls need to do something that they can SEE the people they are helping. She is really hung up on them working with a local domestic violence shelter, and seemed shocked that any volunteers there have to go through extensive training. I named like 5 different other things they could do, and she shot them all down because they weren't "fun" enough for the girls, or because they didn't involve directly seeing the recipients of their work.
It left me feeling super icky. 1. People utilizing the services of a charity at the worst moments of their life do not need to put themselves on display for the benefit of tween girls. 2. As someone who has coordinated volunteers for nonprofits, often the most helpful work that volunteers can do is not glamorous. It looks like stuffing envelopes, or doing event set up or clean up, or soliciting donations for a raffle.
Everyone wants to pet puppies and say they did something good for the world. Maybe it would benefit the girls to see that often the important work is less glamorous but still vital.
I'm skipping to the end so sorry if this has been said. I think there is so much value in teaching these tweens that the volunteer work is in the boring details that allows other work to be done.
For years I volunteered with planned parenthood, even when I was credentialed in healthcare. My jobs were filing paperwork and making phone calls. It was honestly boring. So were many of my paid jobs. That volunteer work allowed other work to be done. Even in my 30s I was happy to do it when I had the few hours to spare.
My high school required 100 hours community service hours. I got them by being a member of the church choir and putting on the annual musical. Do you think I learned anything of value to the world? I also got a few hours for volunteering to sell tickets at the annual junior welfare ball where nasty old men hit on my teen self. My only lesson from that was men are shit.
To quote the ever quotable movie, su su suck it up junior.
I forgot to take my medication (Effexor) yesterday and could definitely tell this morning - I was super tired and felt "off", and I had the weirdest dreams.
I always know I’ve forgotten my Effexor dose because I have weird dreams. Like seriously messed up, Salvador Dali hellscape type stuff.

Skip it till next year! I took both my kids at 18 Mo and it was one of the most traumatic moments of parenting to date lol both my kids FREAKED out and I honestly don't think the dentist did anything. And I'm not one that's sensitive to crying, I'm the parent for all vaccine and other rough times but if I ever have a third I'm just waiting till well into 2 before the dentist.
wanderingback, I can't remember how old exactly your DD is now. If she's not yet 1 or maybe just past it, some pediatric dental offices don't charge for that first visit which is usually only a quick visual exam because they want you to like them and become a patient for the next 10 years. This kind of question is great for asking on a FB group to get a bunch of names for your area. Also regular dentists can see kids of any age though less of them do these days since there are more pediatric dentists around who can see patents starting from age 1.
