Either we think the laws should be on the books and prosecutable, or we shouldn't have the laws there at all. This was a pretty easy slam dunk for the prosecution. Everyone knows he did it. Should he go free because he's a Dem? Is that it? Or because he's a rich white guy? This talking out of both sides of our mouths is stupid. Hunter Biden is the exact type of person this law was made to stop buying guns. He broke the law. Does it matter if it was politically motivated? No, it fucking does not. Shit, going after Trump on the 34 felony convictions was also politically motivated to the extent that he also broke the law and people cared enough to research and build a case against him. That's what happened here too.
except he's not in office, is not seeking office, did not commit this crime in pursuit of office. In fact he said, yeah, I'm guilty and will pay the price, and that still wasnt good enough.
The orange menace is not in any way an appropriate analogy.

The only thing that went wrong here is that a reasonable plea should have been offered and not fallen through. The trial was a waste of resources and going through a trial while in recovery is a bad idea.

Let’s not pretend that a law is just a law. A law is a weapon to use againt some people and twisted to protect others, and we know who is benefitting. No one should equate this with other more serious infractions. Thats why dems keep losing. We are so willing to offer ourselves up for sacrifice out of our own sense of self righteousness. Look at al franken. People on the left were saying he was the same as weinstein.

I agree with a lot of what you say here. Our system is designed to benefit privileged white men and the rules do not apply to them the same way they do for people of color and women.
But it’s Hunter Biden. This is not a marginalized person. He is the person that these laws were set up to benefit. I have to separate the political aspect from this and appreciate that someone who is privileged has been convicted of something that marginalized people are convicted for far more often.
Also, it’s worth pointing out that this eliminates a talking point that the GOP would have been shouting from the rooftops if he had been acquitted.
But, yes, the Democrats need to be less nice. We need to get serious and we need to use the GOP playbook on some things (albeit not all. Please do not be taking pages out of the playbooks of people like Alito, Thomas, Gates, and MTG.)

Who was saying Al Franken was just like Weinstein? No one with any sense was equating the two. Also, usually the Hunter Bidens of this world are the ones benefiting from laws not being prosecuted. So I really don’t understand this take. having a discussion about laws being weapons in this context makes no sense
I just hope the judge gives him a fair sentence. But isn’t this the same judge who threw out the original plea deal?
I will say that I am pleasantly surprised at the FB comment section for an article in a local paper. There are usually lots of Trumpers in there. Of course there are the comments that this was a set up and Hunter took one for the team. But there were a decent number of people who said even though they were not Biden supporters but they wouldn’t hold it against him if he did pardon his son. The common theme was they would do anything in their power to protect their child because that’s what parents are supposed to do. There was a good amount of sympathy for how difficult this situation is.
Also, I did not know this: "...Hallie Biden, the widow of Hunter Biden’s late brother, Beau Biden. Hunter Biden began a romantic relationship with Hallie Biden after Beau Biden’s death in 2015." That is...something.]/
Can we not shame a new widow for how she handled her grief? This isn’t uncommon. Grief really messes with people. many turn to those close to the deceased since they are going through it, too, and understand.
The hunter situation is less like trump and more like precious’s messy presidential relatives, (some of whom did get a pardon). Neil Bush, Clinton’s brother. Carter’s brother, etc.

I may be misremembering but I think there were people in HERE who equated the two and said that we have to hold him accountable in the same way.
