What does everyone have going on since it is summer?
Summer schedule starts for gymnastics on the 17th but the only change is that DD starts at 3:30 instead of 4:30 as they practice longer but same days. DD was hoping to be having morning practice like the optional group does so she could actually do something on gym days instead of just chilling. No pool, no sunbathing, not much of anything because she needs to save her energy for a 4-hour practice.
DD got most improved at the gymnastics banquet last night and she looked really nice all dressed up for it.
I think this will be our last year of camps for all our kids every week. Next summer DD will want to be free-range. All the camps are crazy expensive, but I really value being able to work without being interrupted or keeping track of any kids.
Our summer is only eight weeks long, which I like. DS3 just stays in preschool all summer at the YMCA where he is normally. They close for one week in early August before the new school year starts, and DS3 is signed up for a farm camp across the street from the Y for that week.
For the older 3 kids, they all do two weeks of camp next week and the week after. All YMCA camps (including laser tag, paintball, and flag football) except the second week DD does a basketball camp with friends at a local college, run by the college athletes. Then the week of July 4th we go on vacation in the Pacific NW. First 4 nights with friends in Anacortes, WA, visiting the San Juan Islands, second half of the week just my family in Olympic National Park.
Then two more weeks of YMCA camps (surf camp, rock climbing, and swimming/playing on inflatables in a lagoon). Then we go to Boston/Martha's Vineyard for a week for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary. Then we're home for one night and the older kids leave for a week of sleepaway camp (also a YMCA camp an hour away). Then a week of camp where they take the kids to SeaWorld everyday for a week. Then back to school.
Mid-July I have a work trip to Park City. And the week that the older kids are at sleepaway camp, I'm doing a conference for the credit union committee I'm on, in Monterey. DH is going to come with me and we'll have our babysitter watch the little boys for 3 nights (they'll be in camp/preschool 8-5 so not a huge undertaking).
It's going to be nuts as usual. Thank goodness for our YMCA!
ETA - DD's all-star softball season is still ongoing through at least end of June, depending on whether they qualify for the state tournament. And both kids are playing summer basketball, too.
DS won't have anything going on. I have to facilitate all drop-offs and camp pickups as well as all sports... DD is in the midst of comp season, so he gets pushed to the wayside. I would love to send him to futsal once a week, but he's apparently chopped liver.
DD has practice Tuesdays, 3 on Wednesdays, 1 on Thursday, and two on Saturday, starting at 7am.
School let's out for us on June 102nd. That's not a typo. We go so late into June and have an eight week summer.
The Ds wrap up softball this week. It's a short season, but everyone is finished before it gets tiring. No sports teams this summer. Both ds I signed up for four or five weekly camps. Two of them are sleep away and the others are day camps. They also each have a couple of weeks at home which they're excited about.
DD2 nand H are meeting his brother and his family in Fiji for the last 2 weeks before school starts. In 2019, H took DD1 to Russia with the rest of his family. So this is DD2 's big international trip with just dad.
School's out for us on Wednesday! We are going to Europe for 10 days, and DDs are going to two camps (one half day soccer camp and one nature camp at Grandma's that DD1 is definitely too old for but trying to squeeze in one more summer, lol).
Spring soccer just ended for both, but high school summer league (2x a week) started tonight. Both kids played. DD2 is young (7th grade) but a good enough player and the varsity coach asked her to play so she's doing it. They will play through July, then a couple weeks off before fall club starts again and HS pre-season. I think DD2 will probably play high school as an 8th grader. Maybe.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
We also have an 8 week (ish) summer break. Both boys are going to their normal summer camp this year that is 6 weeks long from 9-3 daily with aftercare available until 6. The first week of summer we went on a family vacation and camp starts this Wednesday. Outdoor soccer starts up again in a month and both boys are doing futsal once a week all summer. Ds1 has a race about every other weekend all summer. The last week of summer my dad and step mom will be visiting so they’ll watch the boys as they both have a half day soccer team camp that week.
My biggest pet peeve is summer camps that are 9-12.
This will be our first summer without constant camps every single day for the girls. ExH and I both work from home and our house, DH is here all day when we have the kids usually anyway, so we decided to save the money and not pay for a ton of Boys and Girls Club camp that they don't really love anymore. They're old enough to not need the constant supervision and activity.
The girls will do a week at a traditional summer day camp, a week with my folks at what they call "Grammy Camp," and two weeks at theater camp spread out through the summer. DS has a bunch of half day camps that he's doing through the school district for soccer and tennis, which I'm so excited for! We just have to hope his mom actually brings him and doesn't let him whine his way out of it. He won't go with the girls to visit my parents even though he's invited and my mom and dad really want him to. Maybe someday...
DD2 has been done with soccer since Memorial Day. Her club coach emailed last night and said that the roster has been reduced by 2-3... so that's good, because it was way too big. DD2 plays midfield and defense, and he lost 3 midfielders and a forward. One new kid joined - I don't know who she is yet - and possibly one more. He will run a clinic or two during the summer, and if we're around, DD2 will attend.
DD1 has a playoff game tonight for softball. If they win, they'll play again in the championship tomorrow night. They've gone 2-2 against this team tonight, so it really is a toss up as to what will happen. I don't know if DD1 will go tonight. We've had a rough couple of days where she's completely forgotten her manners (and possibly her mind), so I will not be attending anything. If DH opts to take her, that's his decision.
I didn't sign up for a ton of camps this summer, and right now, less than a week into summer, I'm regretting it.
DD1 will go to sleepaway camp for 4 weeks starting later this month. DD2 is signed up for a soccer camp later this month - just 1/2 days locally. They are also signed up for an arts camp later in August - DD1 will be a senior CIT and this is DD2's last year as a camper.
DD1 and Dh will go camping in August. DD2 has decided not to go this year, so I'll be signing her up for some kind of camp during that week. A soccer camp that she attended last year just opened up. Last year they had 12 campers, so I'm assuming there won't be an issue getting her in.
I was really hoping to keep the summer loose and unscheduled, so that we could go back and forth to our beach house as we liked. But my kids really don't do well with unstructured time, as I'm seeing now. I'm currently working on my list of rules for the summer. As the crowned "Meanest Mom Ever" as named by my children, I have to maintain my title...
mae0111 , I think DH was mostly joking about sending the kids to longer camps, but there are no real 4 week camps around here. So I told him that your daughter goes to one and that they are more common in the North East (also more boarding schools there too so that is why I assume).
Anyway, would you mind PMing me the camp name? No worries if not, we were just curious. All the camps around here are just 1 week and you have to pick up and drop off still even if you try to add another week. I used to work at a Girl Scout camp where there were 1-2 girls that stayed 4 weeks but that closed down.
After Covid in particular, camps have either scaled back on the sessions that they offer or fill up in seconds, so booking additional sessions doesn't work.
Or if anyone else has a 2-4 week camp recommendation. let me know.

waverly, the Camp my daughters go to does some 10 day + camps but they are all for high schoolers and they involved backpacking. I know there are other camps in/around the smoky mountains that are much more expensive but do offer many weeks. Some require 2+ weeks (mine aren’t ready for that so we checked off the list, plus $$$).
DD2 (incoming 7th grade) is prefers downtime and is good at keeping her self occupied so she has been on a just-a-few camps diet for a few years. This was accelerated this year because the science center is no longer offering middle school camps. She has two weeks of junior counselor daycamp at the Y in July and is currently at a sleepaway ecology camp in the smoky mountains. It is beautiful up here. I am visiting friends a couple hours away while she is at camp. Otherwise she will be hanging out at home, going to the Y, visiting my parents on occasion. Her father has set up some math puzzles for her to do and she has a reading goal to reach. She likes to read and while she doesn’t love math she does like her dad so they will do those math puzzles together.
Her sister is at the same camp, at their younger kids program which is more typical summer camp stuff (more s'mores and swimming, less bird banding). She also has two weeks of Y daycamp and 1 week at the science center. This is her first year not having camps most/all weeks, so we will see how many times I have to call my parents to bail me out. She is 9.
DD1 did not make the dance team for next year, sadly. I was really disappointed on her behalf with how the auditions were run. All the kids were expected to do the same combinations but kids in some classes already had been taught them while DD1’s class came in cold. This is a pretty new program at her school. The younger kids could join the junior team that did not require auditions and the older kids were already on the team so knew the combos, but her class had not had either opportunity given to them. The dance teacher had originally said that they could come after school (for a fee of course) and she would have some extra classes, but she never did that. Nor did she so much as show those kids a video of those combinations.
As a result, DD1 and every kid on the sixth grade was coming in 100% cold. The 5th graders and the 7th graders already had learned the combinations in class. None of her class made it.
I have been encouraging her to go back to martial arts in the fall. We will see what happens.
DD1's softball team lost in the championship last night against a team that has literally not lost a game in 4 years. The teams supposedly change each year... but this coach manages to stack his team every time. The other team are phenomenal ball players, and I'm extremely grateful that DD1 did NOT end up on his team... her coaches this year were amazing.
They ended up losing 5-3... an amazing accomplishment considering they lost to this team earlier in the season 22-5. Lots of garbage calls, but that didn't lose the game for them. They played hard, but came up short. Such a fun season - I'm so happy that she was on the team that she landed on!

After a "sort-of" break in the spring from sports, we have ramped back up this month! DD started the volleyball summer workouts at school this week (3 mornings/week). We will likely sign her up for a short camp in July....and the local clubs will have open play on different nights so we will try to hit up some of that. Tryouts for school & club will be at the beginning of August!
DS tried out for two different challenge teams and got an offer from one! Yay!! He has been working so hard in the last year and I could tell a difference in his tryout (vs. last year's tryout). He is also going to a local soccer camp next week.
DD had her first summer field hockey practice last night. It’s all the middle school and high school girls. DD was the only goalie there (they have three total, a high school kid, DD, and a 9 year old who plays with the middle school kids). She did great and was all smiles the whole practice. They had a new coach there who really helped her a lot. At the end of practice, they all say good things about each other and lots of girls said good things about DD. They also voted to let her do the countdown to their final cheer. She was just so happy and I was so happy for her.
