My 13 year old DS and I are going to stay with my cousin and his wife in Germany for 10 days in August. I was hoping to take two nights to stay over in Salzburg while we are there. I feel totally lost. Has anybody been and can recommend a hotel that is in a good location that won’t break the bank? Thanks so much!

I stayed at the Star Inn Hotel Premium Salzburg Gablerbräu. It’s in a perfect location right near Mozart’s House. I went in October and it was very affordable. One thing to note is it is on a street that doesn’t allow cars so you need to handle your bags once you get dropped off. It’s less than half a block walk to the front entrance.
If you are a Sound of Music fan, the Bob’s Special Tour is great. Even if you aren’t a big fan, the scenery of the stops are all amazing!

we stayed at the hotel goldgasse in 2018. it's also on a little side street that doesn't allow cars. not a big deal since it was just one night and we only had backpacks.
we did the original sound of music tour and had a blast. ditto downtownbk that's there's a lot of beautiful scenery even if you aren't into the movie.
we went to the cathedral, hohensalzburg fortress, a boat tour, and just walked around and enjoyed the city. enjoy!

Our trip was in 2015, so it's been a while, but we stayed at a nice little hotel about 3 miles from the city center (which means taking the bus into the city, but the bus stop was right across the street). The rooms were inexpensive enough that my son and I got our own room (five week trip, so the separation was nice). The rooms were nice, and the breakfast was one of my favorites on our trip. Highly recommend if you don't want to camp out right in the city (but, it's been 9 years, so I'd check to see if any of that is current).
Hotel Gasthof Bräuwirth
Also, Salzburg is where we discovered Almduddler, which was described as an "herbed lemonade" (carbonated). It's good.

I love Salzburg! We only took a day tour there from Munich when we were in Europe last summer, so I don't have any hotel recommendations. However, I highly recommend you try the Salzburg Nockerl dessert while you are there. It's like a combo of meringue and angel food cake. We went to the Stiegl Keller for lunch and got it there. (If you are ordering a meal, I would order the Nockerl with your meal, as it takes some time to prepare.)
Also, the oldest continuously running restaurant in Europe is in Salzburg, and it is located near the cathedral. We did not eat there, but I did take a picture of the entrance.
