DeSantis Vetoes All Arts Grants in Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis gave no explanation for zeroing out the $32 million in grants that were approved by state lawmakers.
Leaders of arts organizations in Florida, many of whom have worked in the state for decades, cannot remember a governor ever eliminating all of their grant funding. Even in the lean years of the Great Recession, at least a nominal amount — say, 5 percent of the recommended total — was approved.

The article I read in the palm beach post said some very few were approved, like for a Holocaust museum I want to say in Boca. But overall it was a slash and burn veto.
to prove the government doesn't really have to spend money, that it's all extraneous. Exception: vouchers for private Christian nationalist schools are a-ok. And for his private army.
It is true many of the orgs will be able to tighten budgets and get some extra donations, at least in the short term.

Don't forget that in the minds of many conservatives the arts are for women and gay people, two groups about which he particularly doesn't give a shit. Also, the arts tend to celebrate ( :whispers: ) multiculturalism! Which is a dirty word in FL these days.

That, too.
It wasn't just arts programs though. Construction, emergency response, utilities...

As someone who lives in Florida, this absolutely enrages me. And yet we continue to fund microschools and homeschools that are truly indoctrinating children. I have zero doubts that this has much about punishing the “woke” arts as it is to do with any sort of fiscal responsibility.

To add onto this, there are a lot of maga politicians who hate government grants and will turn down funding, even if it helps their community. We are seeing this locally.

Like entire states turning down federal funding for summer food programs for kids.
But ppp that enriches then personally? Gimme that cash money!
