I know there are several of us training for marathons this fall (Susie , brooke77 , campermom ) and since my training starts this week I'm going to start this up Please feel free to jump in if you're training for a half / tri / whatever!
What marathon are you training for? Date?
Have your run the race before? Is this your first marathon?
What training plan are you following?
What were your accomplishments from the last week?
Have your run the race before? Is this your first marathon? I have not run MCM, but this will be my 3rd marathon (but my first in 7 years).
What training plan are you following? Mostly following Hal Higdon Novice 2. I may tweak the weekday schedule a bit but will stick to the long run schedule.
What were your accomplishments from the last week? I've gotten back into the swing of things after a few weeks of phoning it in. I had a great 6 mile run over the weekend and feel happy to start training this week!
Any vents from the last week? Not really. I head back to the office 3-4 days per week starting Monday for the first time since Covid and that will definitely make weekday training more difficult, but I'll manage.
What marathon are you training for? Date? Richmond Nov 16
Have your run the race before? Is this your first marathon? I have run this 3 times. The first one was 4:49ish, the second one was my first marathon post divorce (full custody of 3) and I PR’d at 4:45ish! The 3rd I failed to train and ended at 6:10.
What training plan are you following? As usual Hal Higdon Novice and I’ll cut out one short run.
What were your accomplishments from the last week? Uh none. I’m at a mileage base of 0! However I downloaded a new app with coached runs. I dk if I’ll like it, so send me any rec’s!
Any vents from the last week? I’m just lazy and unmotivated, that is all!
What marathon are you training for? Date? MCM on 10/27
Have your run the race before? Is this your first marathon? first one! What training plan are you following? Hal Higdon novice 1
What were your accomplishments from the last week? I'm actually feeling pretty low right now. I signed up for MCM while I was most of the way through a really solid training cycle for my April half. But since then it's just been one thing after another! The week of my half I got a really tight sartorius kind of out of nowhere. I ran my race anyway, and wound up with a little tendonitis in my quad tendon above my knee that I spent 2 months in PT to work out. I'm finally running pain free, but now I'm getting aching on the bottom of my left foot in the morning and after I've been sitting. It is much improved by a night splint for PF, but I don't have completely pain free days on days that I have run. I haven't had PF before, but descriptions of PF read on my symptoms. I'm really nervous/angsty/depressed about it. Why am I falling apart!?
Any vents from the last week? I think the above basically covers it.
ETA: I saw my PT today (Wed) and he thinks the pain I have in my heel is from a particular tight calf muscle, rather than PF. I have stretches to do, and still clear to run. So I'm still in it for today!
Quad Cities Half Marathon 9/22* First time running this, second HM Hal Higdon novice
Accomplishments: Yesterday was Day 1 of official training!
*Vents. This is entirely contingent on my achilles cooperating. I just had my 3rd set of saline/dextrose/lidocane injections in my heels, and while its definitely improving - I'm not sure I'll be able to get past 5-6 miles. I'm going back to PT and have my strength training plan, so fingers crossed. And some runs my feet feel great. And some they dont. I DONT UNDERSTAND!
What marathon are you training for? Date? Chicago 10/13. I might do another one (either CIM or Houston) with a friend. TBD.
Have your run the race before? Is this your first marathon? I ran it last year and loved it so much I’m doing it again! This will be my 7th marathon. I took a LONG break in between marathon 4 (2018) and 5/6 (2023).
What training plan are you following? Eeek. I need to figure this out. I’ve been traveling a ton for work in May and now for fun in June/early July. So…no plan. I will start a plan when I’m back from vacation in two weeks. Likely HH 1.
What were your accomplishments from the last week? I only ran once, but felt OK.
Any vents from the last week? No, other than mild panic about being behind on training…
I took a LONG break in between marathon 4 (2018) and 5/6 (2023).
How was it getting back to training after a long break? Did you goals/expectations change? My last full was in 2017, so 7 years (and 25lbs) ago. I had a breastfeeding infant that cycle so in some ways this should? be easier, but I'm older and life feels a little more chaotic. I have done many halfs in the meantime so I have done some training, but I also remember that full training is a completely different animal than for halfs.

OK same. My 2018 was NYC when my son was still BFing and not sleeping through the night. I was working full-time in office and honestly only ran about 1-2 times a week plus always a weekend long run. I ran 4:44, a PW, but had zero expectations. My PR was from 2016 at 4:04.
For 2023, I stuck to a schedule and missed maybe 4-5 runs. It was the closest I have ever stuck to a schedule. But. I’m just older and slower. (And also heavier). I ran a 4:25. So. I feel like I have to put in a tonnnn more effort to be average.
What are your halfs like? Have you lost speed? If you want to set a reasonable goal, I think the double your half and add 10 is pretty spot on.
Marathon veterans: what are your thoughts on running HMs during your training cycle? Do you do it / avoid it / depends?
My local fall half is on 10/13, two weeks out from MCM. I'm supposed to run 12 that day, so I was thinking I'd register and either it's a supported long run (only 1 mile long) before the marathon, not to be "raced," or if the marathon doesn't work out, it's a fall race. But it's point to point and downhill, which beats up my quads. I was unexpectedly and disproportionately really sore after my fall 2023 and spring 2024 halfs, which were both that kind of course.
Since MCM isn't particularly downhill I don't plan to particularly train for that. At 2 weeks out, it's probably a bad idea, right?
brooke77, good to know. I plan to stick to a good schedule this time but I should probably temper my expectations. My prior marathons were 4:24 and 4:22. I'd love to beat that, but it may not be realistic.
Susie, I did exactly that my first marathon and it was fine. I planned to not race but almost PRed anyway, mostly because by that point in training 13 miles felt like a breeze ha. The downhill part gives me pause, though. I'd probably skip to be on the safe side.
