I canceled my Chase Southwest Visa Tuesday because there was a current sign on bonus of 85000 points. Today, I was declined because I currently have an active card. I called and got nowhere - apparently it takes 30-60 days to clear the system. They were able to reactivate my old card but that was it.
Anyone experience this before? I swear I have done the exact same thing before, canceled and applied again 24 hours letter without any issue. I am well past the 24 month mark for my last bonus so that isn’t the issue.

I haven’t done this, but some cards have a rule that you can’t reopen a new account within a set amount of time, to prevent people from doing this. For the airline cards, it’s sometimes 1 year. I often rotate with DH. Like, right now he has a British Airways card and I have an Alaska Airlines card. If we use a companion fare, the main person has to be traveling.

Thanks. H and I do rotate and it was my turn. I know we have done it in the past and I did read the fine print extremely carefully before hand to be sure - it just said can’t have an active account and no new card holder bonus within the past 24 months. I am well past the 24 month period, and I know we have canceled and opened the next day before. I guess moving forward I just need to cancel earlier and wait for a promotion. I wish that was in the fine print though!
The general rule for reapplying is 10-30 days after cancellation, as it has to clear the system. Chase has gotten fussier in the last six months. I would wait a few weeks and reapply.
