The chef at our favorite restaurant in Portland recommended this place to us and it was great. The tiramisu was sooo good and the limoncello was the best we had on our trip. Her other suggestion was to just wander around Trastevere and find a place off of the main streets because you pretty much can't go wrong: www.instagram.com/explore/locations/528606995/bacco-in-trastevere/?hl=en
We're going back this fall with plans to eat at Armando al Pantheon -- we ate there last time and were lucky enough to be able to walk in at opening, but apparently it's a Stanley Tucci recommended place so reservations are happening this time just in case. We're also going to check out these two places, recommended by a local food tour guide that also takes people to Italy and Georgia, because cheese and wine are my happy things: www.instagram.com/beppeeisuoiformaggi/?hl=en and www.instagram.com/langolo_divino_roma/
thanks, Pibs! we stayed in trastevere in 2008 so we're definitely going back there for a few dinners. one of the food tours i'm looking at is in trastevere.
Pietro al Pantheon is my favorite restaurant in Rome - definitely book as it's small and we couldn't get in the last time. I also like Virginiae and Antonio al Pantheon. I personally didn't love Armando al Pantheon.
La Panetteria for lunch - they have a fixed price menu
Bar San Calisto - super traditional in Trastevere
Food tour - Devour Tours (I used them in Rome and in a bunch of other places)
Not a restaurant, but among my favorite sites are A the Vatican Scavi tour (you have to email for a reservation well in advance) and the Domus Aurea
majesty318 , devour is exactly the tour i was looking at. we are definitely doing the vatican this time. i did it when i studied abroad but H hasn't yet. both my past trips to rome were non-stop, so i'm really only planning on 2-3 big activities for the whole trip. then it's about wandering, apertivo, food, and gelato!
