Passive income or making extra $

For those who take advantage of passive income (besides high-yield CDs and investments), what do you do?

For those who make an extra bit of money with an extra online hustle, what do you do?

Looking to make a little extra cash on the side, preferably in the evenings, when the kid is sleeping.  Maybe an extra 5-10 hrs/week.

I wouldn’t call it passive but you set your own schedule and between my teenager and friend/neighbor, I found out it’s a good chunk of money. Do you like dogs and/or dog owners? At least in my neighborhood, dog owners pay quite a bit for dog watching (at their house) or boarding at yours. You can meet the dog(s) and agree or decline based upon your availability. It’s the kind of thing that once you put your name out there as available, you get referred pretty quickly. Owners bring their own supplies, so very little start up cost. Best part, if you don’t like it, you can drop it (once the owner comes home, lol).

Next summer I plan to tutor elementary aged students from the school I work at. My coworkers charge $30-35/hour and we're in a MCOL area.

I pet-sit, but only for one dog. Our dog doesn't shed, so I never really wanted to do the rover thing and just get any dog, but someone with a dog that looks just like mine was looking for a pet sitter, I replied and I've been watching him since September. I WFH and he comes every Wednesday for doggie daycare, some overnights and I keep him when they go on trips. The money I make from petsitting basically pays for my dogs grooming/vet visits/petsitting when I go on vacation.

I picked up a side hustle writing/reviewing prompts to train AI bots. I work about 5-10 hours a week and make $30/hour, which is just about enough to cover my student loan payment 🙃

The system is chaotic (there are 1000+ people in the group I'm working with), and there have been quite a few technical issues, but overall it's a pretty laid back way to earn extra $.

I tutor online, but I’m very picky about students. I charge between $110-$125 an hour.

Can you do this at your convenience? Day or night? Or are there set times?

It is completely at your convenience - no set times unless you want to log in to a live webinar.

I should note that different projects have different payrates. I'm in the "expert" group, but other groups pay more/less. For example, if you have coding experience, you could get up to $50/hour.

I don't have a link to give for referrals. I have to give them your first/last name and email address. Totally understand if anyone is uncomfortable doing that, but I would also need to give you my first/last name and email address since the recruiters will likely mention me when they reach out via email.

I mean... I get $100 for each referral that passes assessments and completes 10 hours of work, so it would be nice... but the more I think about it, first/last name and email is a lot to share with a stranger on the internet, so I think I'll just share

This sounds interesting.  Do you get a W-2 for this type of work?  I'm wondering if it will be a pain to report on taxes and don't see this covered in the FAQ.

I think it's a 1099 form for contract/freelance work, but I don't think they're withholding anything. I fully expect it to be a pain in the butt when taxes come due. I'm using PayPal to collect the checks, so at the very least I know I'll get some sort of form from them.

I'm participating in medical research trials and they pay several thousand dollars each based on the length of the study. It's very important to get more people who were assigned female at birth in these trials as we are still underrepresented across many forms of research. (more on that here)
If you google "clinical trials" and your city/state you can see if there are any nearby that you might qualify for.

SwimDeep, sounds like we are on the same AI project! I'm also putting in around 5-10 hours a week because they're kind of messy (still waiting on back pay for an error they made in the spring), but the work itself is interesting. And yes, you'll get a 1099!

Absolutely! They need writers/editors, people who speak multiple languages, math experts, scientists, etc. Almost all the prompts I've worked on have been more general knowledge. The point is to train the AI to be helpful and coherent and flag it when it hallucinates or breaks system instructions.

Just a heads up I googled the AI job and there are a number of Reddit threads about it might be a scam and may require a lot of personal information and for you to pay to upgrade or simply not get paid for work completed or pay rates changed. Based on this thread alone with people saying it’s chaotic and another person saying they haven’t been paid for a task done in spring I would say be careful/cautious . This doesn’t sound like a business on the up and up.

I did the same. It seems like it's been ok for some people but I don't think I'm going to take the risk.

I work for our church making all of the media needed for the week. So, I create PowerPoints, Instagram posts, etc. It was just an advertised job though. It didn't have to be someone from our church that took the job. I work 5ish hours most weeks and it pays $500 a month, so it's a decent gig for extra money.
