Remember when I was wondering if I could go represent my state Congress? Someone said it would be good if Bob Menendez left or be forced to leave to open up a spot in NJ for a fresh face.
I missed my chance!
But also, good riddance! We don't need more corruption enablers here. We've got enough other problems and need someone to get stuff done for us in Washington!
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I’m sure he’ll appoint Andy Kim. Kim won the democratic primary for the seat and is favored to win the seat in November. Menendez was running as an independent after being pushed out by the party finally.
The article said he wants to keep his health insurance as long as possible because his wife is fighting cancer and counts on it. I absolutely support him spending the next few weeks prolonging his insurance coverage given that. Too bad he never addressed that glaring systemic issue in his decades in DC…

He can do COBRA or pick up a plan on the exchange like the rest of us regulars. The article says he wrote part of the ACA - he literally is part of the reason the exchange exists. I can send him a referral to a broker!
Otherwise I'm sure gold bars can pay for treatment.
How nice his employer, aka "we the people of NJ," is letting him stay on for that reason.

It seems a little wrong to appoint Kim since he hasn’t won yet, but I agree he’s most likely to win. And apparently having him there before the election gives him a seniority boost I congress - so that would be good. I’m also not sure if Murphy will appoint him since there is probably some lingering animosity about how things went in the primary.

I don’t think Murphy will let the lingering animosity stop him from doing the right thing, truly. And if it gives Kim a boost with committee appointments I would guess Murphy will factor that in. And Kim won the democratic primary, which puts him closer to the seat than anyone else who Murphy could temporarily appoint, it would be the most sensible choice since his polls look great for November.

That makes sense and the Murphys are definitely not done with politics, so it certainly benefits them to play nice.

Absolutely. And had Tammy not been running against Kim she likely would have had my support, it’s just that Kim is incredibly special. I also think Tammy should start in the house instead of jumping right to senate. Maybe she can unseat Chris Smith, that would benefit everyone.
Murphy has appointed George Samir Helmy to take the seat. He will resign once the election for US Senate in NJ is certified and the new senator will be appointed (so he is not making the new senator wait until January - hopefully Andy Kim). nj.gov/governor/news/news/562024/approved/20240816a.shtml
