If someone in your house says There's Nothing To Eat what does that mean to you? I'm looking for a victory here.

When I go over after work I whine at my mom that there’s nothing to eat because she will have random things like- a can of beans, some moldy cheese, and spaghetti sauce, and cookies for the kids.

If my kids say it, they mean the snacks they want are gone.

When my partner says it he means there’s nothing already prepared for dinner. He does all the cooking. He’ll then usually look to see what he can throw together which is usually some sort of stir fry with whatever is in the fridge/fever. He’s not really one to snack or put together something like cheese and crackers for dinner and needs a "meal" so when he says that phrase he means there’s not a meal already cooked for dinner.

I hope I never hit the point where every cheese in my house must be trimmed before eating. This was my fathers house. And he could never figure out why I ate so little there. (That and the fact he would use the same knife for Mayo and the the mustard. And bits of Mayo in the mustard just nauseated me, so, like I could never eat a sandwich for lunch)

When I say it, it means there aren't ingredients that will easily be put together to make dinner.

When the kids say it, it means they don't want any of the non-produce snacks.

When we go to my parent’s weekend cabin I get so grossed out. No, I do not want to scoop mold out of a jar of salsa. Let’s just open a fresh one. I can’t deal with the moldy food.

On the not a crumb of food in the house…. I know this is anxiety I should probably deal with, but starting during Covid and I still can’t stop- I will stand in the kitchen and evaluate
A) how long will this food last us and we are happy with it
B) how long will this food last us if we lose power forever (freezer etc)
C) how long could we survive even if we had to eat things we hate

I think we could carefully make it two years unhappily. Maybe only one. Idk. It is a ridiculous anxiety game that I should stop playing.
I’m about to start freeze drying candy- my plan is if the apocalypse happens, I could trade my freeze dried candy for real food since most of my neighbors are LDS and have better food storage than I do. Although the LDS neighbors are pretty impressed with my stash.

Ah yes, an ingredient household. I have one of those. We never have anything ready to eat except like hummus, cheese, crackers, and fruit. And even then you have to assemble them for a snack. If I want real food, the quickest thing is usually making pasta with butter and cheese.

My house always has plenty of food in it, so that phrase could only mean “there’s nothing I want to eat.”

When I don’t have any ingredients for a planned meal, I typically say something like “I don’t have a meal planned for tonight” or “I don’t have ingredients for a full meal.” Though honestly, there’s almost always a frozen pizza, pasta and sauce, a can or two of condensed soup, stuff to make grilled cheese sandwiches or quesadillas….so there IS always something I could throw together into a meal.

this is my mom. 

do you have any granola bars?? no but there's a box of brownie mix that will just take 35 minutes to bake once you mix it and preheat the oven. or a pineapple that "just needs to be cut up"

We are an ingredient household, apparently.
I don't have any "just grab this and put it in your face" foods... everything requires some sort of prep (I mean, you could just bite into a tomato I guess). We also have very little food in the house at once; we shop to make a specific meal and then we're back to a bare fridge. I don't have a pantry at all.

ETA: I still voted for the second option because that is the correct answer lol

Generally, it means nothing I want to make, although it can mean I don't really have much food in the house. I moved less than a year ago and threw out a lot of old food that just didn't get eaten, it really annoyed me how much went to waste.

I don't really stock up all that much and stick to a strict budget buying just what we need for a given week. We might get to grocery day and have nothing but condiments in the fridge, an empty freezer and nothing but flour, sugar and coffee in the pantry. I don't even keep a spare box of pasta around anymore. There is food in the sense that all these items are food, but you wouldn't be able to put together any sort of meal or snack.

When I say it I mean I don't to eat anything in the house, and/or don't want to cook it up. My mind immediately when to OP heard this from a younger child and there is in fact a pantry full of food...they just don't want to eat/prepare it.

Nothing they WANT, but also nothing easy to grab without cooking involved. If I keep our clear bins filled with fruit/gogurts/string cheese/etc I usually hear this complaint less.

We're privileged enough that my house will never be empty of food. I mean, even if I stopped buying food today, 2 weeks from now we'd still have a pantry full of rice, pasta, cereal people don't want to eat, and boxes of Duncan Hines cake mix I bought 2 years ago when they were buy one get one free. To say nothing of the freezer full of things like meat I bought on sale and froze but never want to cook for dinner because I don't want to deal with defrosting.

At my house, it either means, "there isn't a plate with my name on it sitting at eye level in the fridge holding exactly what I want to eat right now" or "I don't want any of the healthy options I could eat, why don't we have cookies?"

This is my MIL exactly. Except…she doesn’t cook, at all. She either buys prepared food (rotisserie chicken and bag of salad) or she goes out to eat and brings home leftovers to eat. When we visit, we’re lucky if there’s a loaf of bread or fruit that isn’t rotten. We usually end up doing a grocery run as soon as we arrive, which is fine, but kind of annoying.

It's interesting- I read somewhere about houses that have food vs. houses that have ingredients. I grew up in the latter and, to some degree, have the same thing going on.

So when my kids say there's nothing to eat, it means they want snack foods rather than fruits and veggies or leftovers.
