Dear DD You can't work until next June. Stop asking me what minimum wage is going to be and stop asking me how many hours you can work during tax season in 2026. That is too far away. You won't make enough money at 14 to buy and care/house a horse so just stop. You are making me feel like a rotten person. Mom
Dear Ortho Thanks for getting DD in today. I really hope it is just food caught that is irritating her mouth at her rear bracket and not some random tooth part growing out of her gum. She never complains about being in pain so I know it is bugging her when she said her pain scale was at a 5 while brushing her teeth. Worried mom
186momx we found out the hard way that kids under 18 don’t even have to be paid minimum wage in our state. They can (and will be paid) 85% of minimum wage. My son hates it bc he does the same exact job and makes less than 18 year olds, and he’s been working there for a long time. But there aren’t really a lot of options for him. He’s 15 but started at 14.
Dear school district, Thank you for sending out schedules and teacher info today! That's like two weeks earlier than we expected! The girls are going to be so excited to compare classes with all their friends tonight when they get home from camp. And I'm happy to know what we're walking into before school starts. Signed, Grateful parent
Dear DDs, Can't wait to show you your new surprise phones tonight! I got a free upgrade from Gabb so you're getting the next level up. Not the iphones you want, but a few more features and apps that will make all of our lives easier. Hope you like them! Signed, Mom PS - congrats on the parts in the theater camp show! Sounds like you've been upgraded from the lowest level of ensemble to a bit bigger part. Fun!
I was unsure of your once-a-week “late start” for PD for the teachers, but it was actually nice to allow the kids to sleep in a little on Thursdays. They’re tired by Thursday! I managed to keep it straight all year and DH only screwed up once.
But now you’ve introduced a SECOND late-start day each week. That’s guaranteed to mess me up. And on the second late start day, it’s “club day” for high school, which means that I may be looking at 2 drop offs on Tuesdays.
Couple this with the fact that DD1 gets out at a different time every day, and my head is spinning. I will figure it out, but I’m a worrier by nature, and I just hope I can keep it all straight once we add sports practices and activities back in!
Signed, Trying not to worry and just enjoy what’s left of summer
Dear school, THANK YOU for separating the DDs from their frenemy like we requested! The weight that is visibly lifted for DD2, who bore the brunt of the drama last year, is incredible. Last night she couldn't stop talking about how great this school year was going to be and how much she was looking forward to getting to know new kids without feeling like frenemy was going to make her life miserable over jealousy. Last year she woke up every day miserable and whining. We are all breathing a sigh of relief over here. Signed, Mom hoping 7th grade isn't the nightmare people say it can be
campermom, that royally sucks. In Oregon minimum wage is the same for everyone no matter the age. It is higher in the Portland Metro area than it is in our area but it still is the same for everyone working that rate.
Dear Wisdom Teeth DD is only 13 will you please leave her alone. Her bottom wisdom teeth are growing in sideways and are still baby wisdom teeth but the root growth is causing her a lot of teething pain. Orthodontist said he would keep an eye on it and to bring it up at our next cleaning with her dentist. I know they will need to come out but I wasn't thinking this soon. Me

When I was 12, they took out the “buds” of my wisdom teeth so I never grew them. It’s much easier/less painful than waiting for them to erupt and screw up the rest of your teeth.
I have 1.5 weeks until I start back at work and I'm beyond ready!
excited, macmars
Dear DS' & my school,
Why is there no quick meeting with your kid's classroom teachers until after the first half day of school? All other years there are openings for that the day before school starts as well as the first 3-4 half days of school. I always arranged for the day before for the teacher's sake because my autistic/adhd kid needs accommodations and support. I guess by 3rd grade you all know he likes to hide under the desk/table and do other out of the ordinary things while he gets used to school again so whatever.
mommyatty, that is good to know. She had to have 4 teeth pulled last year to deal with overcrowding and her face/jaw is just petite so no way to stretch it.
186momx, DS (13) just had his bottom wisdom teeth out. The one wisdom tooth was growing in sideways and his last 12 yr molar wasn't coming in because of that.
His recovery was better than getting all 4 out, but I was still glad that I did it on school break because he would have needed 3 days off of school. First day was OK, second day was a bit more painful and started the chipmunk stage, third day more pain and swelling, and by the 4th day the swelling was mostly gone and hardly any pain meds needed.
I can’t believe I have a middle schooler! You are SO alike me in so many ways, but have so many of the best parts of your dad mixed in. Not one ounce of the anxiety or nerves about this transition that would have come from me. That’s 100% your dad’s mentality - no point worrying about a problem that doesn’t exist!
Signed, Proud mama
Dear DS,
3rd grade! And you somehow managed to end up in a class without a single one of your closest friends, which is impressive, since you have so many! I am apprehensive but hopeful about your teacher - if she lives up to her reputation, she can drill Sargent you into shape.
