I just checked. We just had a primary vote here in WA state and I got my ballot by mail & voted as did H.
Every state should do vote by mail entirely. WA state and OR have been doing it successfully for decades.
ETA: I talked to my sister recently about how vote by mail is inclusive to those who aren't very mobile, can't get time off work etc etc. I only have one sister who isn't a republican voter unfortunately so she was pretty sure it was a bad idea due to fraud blah blah blah.

I love how my state (NJ) does it. We have vote by mail available to everyone without needing a reason (when i was in college it was only available for absentee and you had to prove need, I’m glad that’s no longer the case), and you can register to permanently vote by mail, which my mom and her partner do. We also have 10 days of early in person voting plus Election Day in person voting. I hate voting by mail and only do it if I’m away, but I generally don’t otherwise send things in the mail and am nervous about it getting lost. I love the process of going in person and voting at the machine. I always go to early in person, though, in case something happens preventing me getting there on Election Day. I love how easy they’ve made it and how many options exist.
Thank you for this! I just changed my last name and went to town hall to update it for voting. According to that website, it's still listed under my old last name and that won't match my ID. Guess I'll be making another trip back to confirm updates!
Thank you. It's been a while since I voted and my registration was inactive and still tied to my parents' house. I updated it, so I should be good to go for this election.

Our town in NJ has a giant ballot box outside where you can drop your ballots. The box is available 24/7 which is great for people like me who find it hard to fit everything into business hours. This year we will most likely be out of town that week so even better.

My state does it the same way. He voted on it in either 2016 or 2018 I don’t remember. It passed by a large margin and yet in 2020 the gop tried to challenge it. Luckily it didn’t go anywhere.

I forgot about those boxes lol! There’s one right outside my polling location, but I’ve never thought to use it. NJ really does try to make it easy, which I love!
We have early voting in NY which is nice. It includes evening and weekend hours in the days leading up to Election Day, which is really helpful if you struggle to fit it into a Tuesday. Not quite as convenient as mail, but definitely better than "absolutely have to get there on one particular Tuesday."
I just voted in our D primary in June so I'm good to go for November. Everyone needs to mobilize!

My city has ballot boxes (near city hall) and places in the Seattle area have them at every library. My ballot has never been lost in the mail in 21 years of voting by mail in every election, fwiw penguingrrl. :-)

I'm annoyed my eastside (king Co, not of the state) city moved the ballot drop box from city hall to the library. Now I have to go through a stop light to drop it off! I could drop it at the post office, but I prefer the drop boxes.
That is seriously the most stressful thing about my vote by mail experiences.
Despite the fact that I vote in almost every election, I just freaked out for a good five minutes that I somehow couldn't in Nov because my name wasn't coming up in the state database. I have two first names and two last names, and some systems use my hyphens and some don't, and I couldn't remember exactly how I registered (even my passport and driver's license have differences), so I had to get well through all the possible combination before it came up. 😂

Piggy backing off of the OR fully mail in for the past 30 years. Oregon also recently (2016) went to automatic registration through DMV records. It is BRILLIANT. You don't have to do anything. They just send you a ballot at election time.

Yes! Washington offers this too! It's brilliant. And they changed it last year so it isn't just the DMV - you are automatically registered when you interact with any state agency where you show proof of citizenship. They then mail an "opt out" form if for some reason the person doesn't want to be registered.

BUT what about my Republican neighbor who *literally* told me that people SHOULD have to put in some effort to vote. “You don’t want just anybody voting!”
Well…thanks for saying the quiet part out loud. Yes, as a matter of fact, we DO want everyone to vote! (Preferably informed & voting, but voting needs to be accessible to *everyone*)

Thanks for the reminder! I just requested my mail in ballot. Florida makes you re-request it every calendar year, but other than that our voting options are awesome. Anyone can get a vote by mail ballot without giving a reason for needing it, early voting is open for a long time (over a week) before elections, and if you request a mail in ballot but decide you want to vote in person, you can just surrender the mail in ballot at the polling place where they will shred it and let you vote in person instead. I wonder how long we'll get to keep all of these choices that make voting easier?
I know voting is largely under the control of the individual states, but I wonder if there would be a way to pass a federal law requiring states to make voting easier through automatic registration or offering mail in ballots to everyone.
I worked registration at the high school here in Friday and the League of Women Voters had a table to help students register. In CA you can pre-register at 16.

They passed "Motor Voter" in 1993 which was supposed to make it easier but a lot of places are just not complying and there are lawsuits all the time.

Same here in OR. We always drop our ballots off at a ballot box instead of sending it in the mail. They are in many places including near city halls and libraries. I love mail-in voting as you can just check everything in your own home with the voter's pamphlet right next to you.
Triple check if you’re in Texas. And don’t stop with the Secretary of State. Go to your county to ensure you haven’t been dropped. Especially if you’re in a blue county like Harris County (Houston) or El Paso or Dallas.
