What's your deli order?
Brought to you by the fact that the only ham we eat has been recalled due to listeria at the processing plant. Boar's Head Virginia Ham. I asked my deli what a good substitution was and they didn't have one. I brought home a few different hams and... meh. We just really love BH Virginia ham. This was at HEB; our grocery stores are limited but I'm going to see what Whole Foods might have as a good sub.
We're a ham family and my kids and H take sandwiches maybe 2x week. My deli order is 1# Virginia Ham sliced on a .5 1/2# hard salami on a .5 1/2# havarti cheese on a 1.
They like their sandwiches on Hawaiian rolls with mustard.
I'd love to be inspired to try something new as we kick off the school year and i really need to find a good substitution for our recalled ham.
Ha! We don't buy deli meat often but when I do I'm 100% BH Virginia smoked ham:) I was so sad when we went to the beach a few weeks ago and they didn't have it!
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus

I most often grocery shop at Target and Aldi, neither of which have a deli. So my family eats sandwiches, but we buy the pre-packaged, highly preserved deli meat. Dh, ds, and dd all eat hard salami, and they actually prefer the Target container of salami to actually deli salami that I get if we are out of it and I'm at a different grocery store. I don't eat sandwiches often, but I sometimes buy Hormel oven roasted turkey breast for myself (not smoked). Dh likes smoked turkey and any ham for himself. I do tend to buy whatever the smallest package of whatever was freshly packaged and delivered to those stores for him...if not then I get the container of hillshire farm or whatever. It usually gets thrown out before it's used up. And also prepackaged provolone cheese.
I am SUPER picky about lunch meat. Most brands gross me out so much mainly bc of texture or bc they’re so damn…wet 🤮
I really only like BH and only sliced super thin or shaved. Right now we have Pitcraft turkey and it’s delicious. Super super smoky so a lot like ham. It’s very salty though (which I enjoy). The maple turkey is also delicious.
The rest of my deli order is Genoa salami sliced thin and Cooper sharp cheese. Sometimes I get BH sandwich pepperoni which is my fave for snacking or pizza.
We've mostly gotten away from meat sandwiches (apart from occasional canned tuna or canned chicken). When/if we do get deli meat it's ham or turkey. H usually buys it so I have no idea which brand it is.

Ours is usually the Hannaford Taste of Inspiration Virginia baked, but mostly I just walk up to the counter and ask for baked ham (as to not get the pressed processed ham loaf).
I usually get quarter pound of ham, 5 slices of sandwich pepperoni, 5 slices of hard salami. It’s just the kid who takes it in her lunch.
Sometimes well done roast beef and provolone. Sometimes some pepper jack cheese, if H thinks he’ll be home for lunch.
This subject keeps cracking me up. I know what you meant, but it reads a little like "does your family consume this exotic food known as the 'sandwich'"
I want someone to come in blazing all Sandwiches are terrible! I feel sorry for your husband!"

Even going through this thread, I feel like sandwiches aren't as common and I feel a little shamed. (kidding, mostly!!)
mofongo I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that loves BH virginia ham!! I was so crushed. I eat a few thin slices with cheese and crackers as a little snack and I'm going to miss it. Hopefully it comes back soon!!
I don't love ham but I do like black forest ham sometimes. Our local grocery store pre slices their own brand and has it in the deli case so I'll just grab that.
I like Black Forest. My former dog was a ham enthusiast and he really enjoyed the Sam’s club ham (all varieties). He was not a fan of the cheaper hams at Walmart or Publix. (He was a great dog and his love of Sam’s ham over deli ham covered my Sam’s membership fee).

I don’t eat ham but DH and DS1 like the roll of little circular thin sliced ham from Costco. I personally don’t think it’s seems as good as boars head though.

I think dietz and Watson is superior to BH. Safeway carries it in the dc area - perhaps that’s an option near you? bjs wholesale has it too. We eat boars head pitcraft smoked turkey if you want to try something non ham. (We eat BH bc we do regular shopping at giant and that’s what they carry.)
If I'm buying meat for my sandwiches, my favorite is to get the in-store (small chain with a local commissary) roasted turkey or roast beef; I'm avoiding them until the BH dust settles as they sell BH and use the same slicers. I personally am more of a BLT, egg or tuna salad person. When the BH thing hit, DS took PB&J to work
DS isn't fussy about brand, he likes BH or Dietz and Watson Deluxe Ham. I think they're comparable quality. D&W is the hometown favorite. He likes Wegman's ham as well and it has the benefit of being half the price. He likes Genoa Salami and seasoned/smoked turkey breast. If you're trying to get someone to eat more turkey vs ham, BH Pit Craft Turkey tastes pretty close to ham.

S/O...do you all eat or at least know of brick cheese? This was a discussion the other day when I was out. I grew up eating brick cheese, and a few other people commented that they liked it, but other people had never heard of it, and didn't think it was an actual variety of cheese you could get at a deli. They thought we were referring to a brick of cheese, and when we clarified that no, it was the name of the type of cheese we would order at the deli, they were like huh, I wouldn't believe that was a thing.
As I said before, I don't usually shop at stores that have a deli, but I kinda want to go to the store with a deli now just to see if they carry brick cheese and get some if they do.
expectantsteelerfan, yes! I haven’t had brick cheese since I was a kid and pretty much forgot it existed. I’ll have to see if any stores around here carry it.

expectantsteelerfan I have only heard of brick cheese; it is in a recipe given to me by my Ohio-residing aunt. We don't have it here. She said to sub munster. idk ? Is it similar?
One of my greatest disappointments is that I moved to an area without Boars Head at the deli. I’ve learned to like other ham. It’s possible. See if you can ask for “off the bone”’or “boiled ham”. Always, always ask for sliced thin (not shaved) - it’s a personal preference.
