I just go an email informing me that I can sign up for Amazon One which will allow me to pay "with my palm" at Whole Foods and amazon retail locations. I imagine since they're doing it, others will likely follow. Errr. No thank you??
Like, this aspect of the future in the sci fi books is NOT a good thing. Why are we doing this?
Do others find this off-putting? Am I being paranoid? I guess it'd be nice for my cards not be able to be stolen because it's literally MY HAND, but........i mean........no?

They’ve had this at my local Whole Foods for awhile. I def have not signed up! I pretty much refuse to shop at Amazon but still go to Whole Foods a couple times a month :/
From what I remember seeing I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone using it.
I don't understand using biometrics for identification if there's no need. The database that stores the stuff that is tied to it, like credit card information, is just as easily hacked as the plastic card in my pocket.

My objection is all vibes, but this is a much better point. LOL

I already use biometrics to unlock my phone & pay, so I'm not opposed in theory. I think it's more about the control of information- they don't need to store that info.
It is similar that I can use my face as a password to log onto websites, but again, that all feels self-contained within my phone.
The Whole Foods near me has had this for at least a year, and I've never seen anyone use it. I don't feel creeped out by it, but I'm also definitely not ever going to use it 🤷‍♀️

The only thing that gives me pause is how dirty it would be. I don’t want to put my hand where a billion other people who sneeze into their hands and/or don’t use the sink after using the restroom. No thanks.
The thing that concerns me about it (and I'm not a data security expert so maybe someone can explain) is that if/when your biometric data is leaked, you can't change your handprint the way that you can change a password. So once it's out there, there's nothing you can do to "reset" your security.
My old workplace had a timekeeping system where you could scan your thumbprint to clock in and while they swore that the system didn't save your actual thumbprint, just a code based off the print, it seemed too risky to me and I didn't use it.
There is a Reddit palm reading sub. People upload photos of their hand, and that creeps me out because of how it could be used. Wow, could I save a photo from that and pay at Whole Foods?

So yeah… no.
No, pictures won't work because it's also reading the vein structure.
Fuck no. I don't use biometrics for my phone either. I think I also saw the local MLB stadium now has an option to use your face as your ticket (facial recognition). Also hard pass.

Eh, that's true of every surface you touch. It would just be more visible.
I've had to do biometrics for entry into many countries (Singapore does facial rec, Jalapeñomel, so no dirty surfaces ) which I'm obviously ok with, but I don't think I'd be cool with it just to pay for some groceries. Like pixy, I think the database is equally maybe even less secure than a card I can keep in my pocket and cancel and change in an instant.
I'm also someone that balks at proprietary apps just to order some damn food. I'm not a luddite. I just want my tacos, and here's my cash or card.
