Well yesterday aged me about 5 years! Me and DD had the fun idea to take our bikes to her favorite restaurant in the town center for dinner, but things didn’t go as planned. Not long after we left our driveway, a car couldn’t see her as they pulled out of their driveway and they collided. Fortunately her helmet was on and she would have just been checked out with bumps and bruises, but unfortunately the fall caused her brake handle to impale her inner thigh. When first responders arrived, they determined they needed to take the bike apart to get it off of her and leave the handle for the hospital to remove. Because of her age and the painful injury, they thought a Medflight would be better than a bumpy ambulance ride so we prepared for that, but once they gave pain meds and stabilized her leg, they decided she could tolerate the ambulance ok and canceled the Medflight.
We zoomed to Children’s Boston where the trauma team awaited us to make sure she had no injuries that weren’t obvious. The brake handle was removed and after X-rays and other testing came back negative, they decided to take her to the operating room to explore and clean the wound under anesthesia. Fortunately, it wasn’t as deep as feared and didn’t pierce her muscle. She’s home now and resting comfortably and has her fingers crossed she can make it to her first concert on Wednesday night (P!nk)! As scary as it was, the outcome could have been so much worse so we are grateful for that and for wonderful first responders, doctors and nurses. She’s a little bummed she didn’t get to take a Medflight but I’m ok with that!! 🙇♀️

Holy crap! What a bizarre accident - and I’m sure terrifying for both of you. So glad it had as good of an outcome as it did and fingers crossed for an awesome concert trip.

The other tough thing is I didn’t know it happened right away. She asked me to ride ahead of her because she wasn’t sure of the route to the restaurant. I had said I would, but that I would stop at a certain street for us to cross together because it’s a little busy. When I got there and looked behind me I couldn’t see her anywhere, even though I had a clear view of almost all the way back to where we started. A woman pulled over and asked if I was looking for a girl on a bike and when I said yes, she said she had seen her get hit but she was sitting up and conscious. The woman told me to hop in her car and had her teenage son ride my bike back. It probably took 60 seconds to get up the street in the car, but it felt like a lifetime. When I got there, she was on the ground with the bike on her, and the driver of the car and his wife were with her and had called 911. The man was driving and he was beside himself. It really was a total accident, it’s kind of a blind angle to the sidewalk getting out of his driveway. I was just NOT prepared to see that handle jammed into her leg like it was.

I also couldn’t reach STBX for over two hours. I finally tracked him down at our friends place at the beach. Our friend went to the bar he was at to drag him out of there and deliver the news and he was yelling at her and being belligerent because he didn’t want to leave and she didn’t want to tell him in the bar. I told her that under no circumstances did I want him to come to the hospital and take his keys away from him. Once she did tell him, he was hysterical and punching things. But we did convince him to just stay put and that he could pick us up in the morning to drive us home and that’s what he did.
OMG! That sounds really scary, but I'm glad ultimately it's going to have a positive outcome. Sorry your ex was being a belligerent dick, and fingers crossed the P!nk concert still happens for your daughter.
Omg that’s terrifying!!! I’m so glad your Dd is ok. Our kids are the same age and I can’t even imagine how scary that must have been. So many hugs to you.
Ugh DD has started riding bikes longer distances with her friend and their dad and now I’m even more nervous about it. H and I don’t have bikes so we can’t go with them.

I am sorry this happened! I cannot imagine those 60 seconds it took you to get back to her, and I’m so glad the driver who alerted you at least said she was conscious and sitting up.
Cars backing out is one of my biggest worries with A riding his hike to school.

I'm so sorry that happened, but glad she is on the mend and that things were not worse. I think it's time for you to get a break and yikes that your STBX needed people to take away his keys and deal with his punching stuff. So confused how he has friends with the way he acts.
Oh my gosh! That sounds terrifying for everyone! There’s a lot to be thankful for here, but also a lot to be really shook up about.
I hope she’s feeling well enough to enjoy the concert, and I agree that it would be a good idea to call the venue and see how they could help accommodate her.
Thank goodness for her medical team. From first responders to the surgeons, it sounds like they made good decisions every step of the way. I’m glad you are both okay.
