I went to see The Indigo Girls and Melissa Etheridge last night. We got the tickets mainly to see The Indigo Girls but Melissa Etheridge was absolutely phenomenal. At 63 years old she absolutely rocked. She just had such an amazing energy.

8th grade open house for DD this morning. We're going to see if we can get her switched to a different math teacher because the feedback on the teacher she was assigned is not good. I don't want DD to lose all of the progress and confidence she's gained the past 3 school years in math all due to one bad teacher.
DS's football team had a scrimmage last night. He scored 2 touchdowns, was rotated into the 1st string group later on in the scrimmage because of how well he was playing (we'll see if they change his string for the first game), and then got a migraine. DH and I think he was really stressed about the scrimmage and that is what triggered it. Hopefully he doesn't stress himself into triggering a migraine before or during the first game of the season next week.
My big plans for the weekend involve catching up on house cleaning/chores.
Fun! The Indigo Girls are playing at a small venue near me in December and I've considering getting tickets.
We're headed down the Cape later this afternoon to stay with friends for the weekend. It should be super fun (after what promises to be a traffic-filled journey). Their kids are my kids' classmates and we as parents hit it off but the kids are peripheral friends at best. We're still at the ages where we can force it though for our own enjoyment lol.

It's a Bank Holiday weekend here (Monday is a national holiday). We're not doing a ton or going away, but I am hosting a work gathering at a bar tonight, going out with a friend tomorrow night and a date night on Sunday. Hoping to get some good sleep this weekend. My H is going to do some pizza experiments with his Ooni. I will enjoy the results!
midwestmama, did you read everyone's response in yesterday's randoms? Please don't base changing teachers on what kids say. They can be unreliable at judging the effectiveness of a teacher's abilities. I highly recommend letting your DD start the year off with this teacher and see how she does. You never know.
DD and I stayed up to watch Harris accept the nomination last night and holy hell, I'm tired. But we watched together 8 years ago when HRC accepted, so we weren't missing it this time. It was so fun to watch with her now as an almost 16yo with a much bigger worldview, and see her getting excited about the future of American politics.
I've been working a few hours a week with another federal agency as professional development time, and I would LOVE to work there on this program full time. They've been talking about needing someone full time in the next phase of the program, and yesterday they sent me a job description to review and make suggestions on. I sent my thoughts, and the lead asked if I'd be interested. Um, yes please! I think it would technically be a step down for me, but much more of the parts of my job I enjoy most, shorter commute and more telework, and I think just an overall better culture.
I went to see Jodi Picoult's book tour last night, and it was great! The book sounds really interesting and she was an engaging and likeable speaker. I got to meet her for less than 30 seconds to take a picture, too. It started at 7 and I was home by 9, which is also perfect for a weeknight event, especially when the DNC was on! I was glad to be home in time to see Kamala speak - she did a phenomenal job and I'm so excited about the possibility that she could be our first female president.
We decided to go to Jamaica over Thanksgiving so I am currently focusing my happy energy on that, too. I found a boutique hotel that is all inclusive and adults only, so I booked us for 6 nights there. Apparently the food is really good so I'm looking forward to that. We are ready for a relaxing vacation so I expect we'll spend most of the time just hanging out at the beach/pool, but I will also try to find a few things off site to do too. The hotel is in an area where a bunch of other places to eat/drink/shop are within walking distance, so I think this is going to be a perfect place for us.

Oh man. I had tickets to see them Saturday at Wolf Trap with a group of friends. And then I had to go and get Covid. *grumble*
Also, good lord it’s everywhere. I have 6 friends with Covid right now. And none of these circles overlap. I had a video visit with my doctor this morning and I asked about incubation, because I’m trying to figure out where I picked it up. She agreed that the airplane was too recent, and says it’s about 3 days. Which puts it at the errands I ran on Sunday. Or the gym on Saturday.

It's in the low 70'e and breezy! My mood improves dramatically when I'm not hot lol.
A high schooler gave me the finger this morning. She was blocking an intersection so after 40 seconds or so I gave a short courtesy beep. Little brat flipped me off!

I work from home a few days a week, and have discovered there is a home daycare near me. Every day, the provider walks 5-7 preschool-aged kids down the sidewalk at about 10:30. I really want to leave bubbles for each of the kids, or an applesauce packet, or just some little surprise every now and again out by the sidewalk for them.
But people are so weird and cagey about everything anymore and derive no joy from acts of community and kindness. So it would probably be totally pointless.

Friday downer.
I'd start small - maybe chalk something on the sidewalk? Hopscotch or a path to follow?
I'm currently working from a salon chair under the hair dryer. I'm so cozy and warm right now. Getting my very gray roots colored. Normally I don't do appointments during the workday but students in my online school aren't back til Monday.
DS got a Chicago Bulls jersey and Air Jordan's (used) last night for his birthday yesterday and he was so excited to wear it all to school today. He even slept in the shoes, lol. He's so cute.
No major plans tonight. The first HS football game is tonight. H will be going since he's an admin in the district and he just likes to go. I kind of wish DS wanted to go just because I know he'll have friends he could run around with there, but I don't think he will want to, which is also fine with me because I'm peopled out this week. Maybe I'll just get some takeout tonight and have a beer on my porch!
H is doing a golf tournament tomorrow so we're on our own- hopefully we can get in another pool or lake beach day since those possibilities are dwindling fast.

LOL @ sleeping in his shoes! so cute and something my boys would do. happy birthday to your son!!
Patsy Baloney - you could do a sidewalk chalk thing like "silly walk", "turn in a circle" or a hopscotch pattern or something for them to do while they're walking?
Disney was fun! Guardians was the coolest coaster!
We love that one. I’m slowly collecting all the songs. We’ve done the Christmas overlay and had September, I Ran and Disco Inferno.
Honestly, all those rides with those tricky pre-shows blow my mind. When it does the transition from the first room to space, I was just like WOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW! out loud. Im sure I sounded like I just fell off the turnip truck.
Patsy Baloney , my mom lives 1 block from an elementary school on a corner lot. She has a retaining wall that runs along the sidewalk on the front and side of her house with a crevices between the rocks on the wall. She started putting individually wrapped candies out on the wall for different holidays. Lots of the neighborhood kids call it the magic wall. So yeah, do something fun for the kids!
Today is DD’s 17th birthday. I took her for donuts this morning. We will have ramen for dinner.
The weekend is slammed with events. Sunday we are going to Joan Jett at The Ryman. I’m stoked to have a night with H
Oh this will be SO GOOD! She opened for Alanis Morissette and was awesome and The Ryman is amazing.
This will be my 5th time seeing Joan. I love the Ryman. It’s my favorite venue. So much history and the sound is amazing. I’ve seen over 50 shows there.
We had middle school back-to-school night last night and I'm concerned. DD going into 6th has dyslexia and dyscalculia but is super "normal" socially and incredibly worried about looking different. I've been asking since last winter how I could find out the plan for middle school. I was told at the IEP meeting in spring that someone would contact us re: a special summer meeting to talk through her schedule. That turned out to be a group "special ed" school tour that we skipped b/c socially/psychologically she does not want to be on a group special ed tour. I think all these kids are GREAT but if you are a sixth grade girl trying to be cool in middle school, you don't want to be grouped with all the boys (I don't know if there are any other girls, which is odd) who have much more obvious disabilities/autism/behavioral issues.
So last night as we are taking the regular back-to-school tour/locker supply drop/meeting teachers I realize that her resource hour is with ALL the special ed kids in her "house". AND her locker may be grouped with all special ed kids? This may or may not be okay as she probably DOEs need the homework help. BUT I also realize she is in a "special" literacy with I think all the special ed kids and a special math!!! THis is exactly what I did NOT want to happen to her. She will be totally demoralized. I'm following up with the school today to try to figure out whether my assumptions are correct or not.
FWIW, she has always been in regular classes with pull-out help and actually she's doing really well in literacy. She still struggles a LOT in math.
I'm just so upset...yet again...at the way this was handled by the district/school. Also, WHY is DD like the only kid ever going to special ed for dyslexia??? I am quite sure there are more kids!!!!!!
Plus the lovely kids on the bus use "sped" for "special ed" as an insult frequently meaning dumb/clueless. I hate it and I hate that she's aware of it.
