Throwaway account.
Suppose you're moving from MI to FL in a few weeks. Which state needs your blue vote more in the November election?
For the presidential election, MI is a swing state but FL is not.
On the other hand, FL has abortion rights and recreational marijuana legalization on the ballot. Rec weed will bring a lot of voters out who might not otherwise vote, but it's FL so there's still a better than even chance those voters are RWNJs.
Oh that’s a tough one. My initial thought was Michigan - I know there is a lot of talk about Florida being in play but I think it’s a stretch and we know Michigan is an important swing state. However abortion rights being on the ballot changes things because obviously that’s a really important issue.
While I’m still on active duty, my husband and I can vote in the state of my “home of record” which is FL or our “state of residence” which is NC. We kept our Florida voters registration (and have double and triple checked our registration status), but I kind of wish we were voting in NC. When I retire next year we’ll have to switch the NC anyway.
What are the deadlines and requirements to register in Florida? What are the absentee ballot rules for Michigan? I think I'd start with where *can* you vote and make sure that is locked down.
I need to change my own registration and everything else from one side of town to the other, but so far I don't have enough proof for the schools (same school district, but their residency proof process is lengthy and apparently they want the whole kit and caboodle for an in town move, too.) I might be driving back here to cast my vote if I can't get it switched in time...
If you are moving and will be a FL resident, how long do you have for transferring the registration?
@villainv, can you move your registration to NC and vote there? I don’t know their deadlines but I know Florida’s registration deadline is in early October.
Eta: to answer the hypothetical question, Michigan.
Oh that's tough. I think I'd go with Michigan. So far all the abortion ballot measures have passed and I feel like Florida will definitely legalize weed. I have no data for that, just vibes 🤣
My mom is moving from northern Virginia to Michigan in 2 weeks, I'd love to get her to vote here but she won't because she's staying with me until her house sells so "she won't have an address". She's an anxious mess so I'm trying not to be pushy, since my dad died 2 months ago, and she's packing up her whole house of 35 years but I really want her to vote here!
I would say Michigan. Personally I know FL Trump voters that are pro choice and would 100% vote for legalized weed. FL is never going to go for Harris. It's pure red nowadays IMHO. So many Trump signs when you go down there. It's part of the FL redneck ethos. But there are plenty of Republican FL Trumpers that have had abortions in the past and will need to so in the future. This is such a miscalculation on Republican strategists. Plenty of Republicans have abortions!
I would say Michigan. I'm in a red state. We've had abortion rights and legalization of marijuana on the ballot. Both passed. I know plenty of Trump supporters that voted for both.

Is there a reason is can’t use your address? And then change it once she moves into her new home?

She's saying she won't have proof of residency, she doesn't want to go through getting an ID for my house and then getting another one 3 months later. Which I get. She has her plate full right now, she doesn't feel as strongly as we do about things. When Biden was still in the race she decided to just not vote this year, so this is not top priority for her. She's not political.
But hey, with my dad passing that's at least one fewer vote for Trump 🤷
After reading Heather Cox Richardson’s post about the Electoral College and how Lindsey Graham was in Nebraska yesterday trying to convince the state to switch from a split EC vote to winner-take-all bc it literally may come down to a single EC vote - Michigan.
