My son’s school does not allow them to wear sneakers for homecoming. He needs a pair of black dress shoes. Any idea what would be in style for a teen boy with a dress shoe? And even better where I can get them affordably? Last year we bought something that we both didn’t love that cost more than I wanted to spend. They were worn once and his feet are still growing so I don’t want to make an investment.

Stuff like this is when I really miss Payless. That store was always great for stuff like this. When I had to buy my son shoes 2 years ago, I think I just pulled up "mens dress shoes" on Amazon Prime and told my son to pick the pair he liked best, and gave him a limit of $40. I just looked, and there seems to be tons of options. If you need guidance on an actual style, I really think that you can't go wrong with a classic Oxford.

If you have time to look in person at possibly multiple places, I've had good luck finding them on clearance/cheap at places like Burlington, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, etc. I've also found clearance men's dress shoes (that I bought for ds) at Target and Kohls. Like $5 a pair clearance.

That kind of sucks. Sneakers at homecoming are big around here. I bought dress shoes at Walmart when I knew they were only being worn for limited events.

If you have a week or more for shipping, Mercari is my go-to for stuff like this and sports gear. They grow so fast, I’d much rather spend $10-25 on something nicer and barely used by someone else I could give away or resell, than buy something new and cheap from Amazon. If not, I’d go to Nordstrom Rack or Target. We’ve found some decent oxfords with laces there. I think slip on loafer styles, hybrids that look dressy but feel like a sneaker sole or chunkier styles like combat boots or chunky sole loafers are popular.

Dress sneakers are a thing now. These are on the more casual side but would be easy to rewear with a different style outfit if he doesn’t need dress shoes often. If you search on Amazon there are some dressier ones all under $40.

We got DS dress shoes at DSW. It was more than we wanted to spend, but he joined ROTC and they have to wear dress shoes when they wear their uniform every Tuesday, so at least he'll get some use out of them. His feet are bigger than DH's now, so we can't share
David and H have the same size feet so he can wear his. I agree with the Payless comment. David used to only need formal dress shoes maybe twice a year so we'd just hit Payless then donate them when he'd inevitably grow out of them in six months. I think when Payless closed, we looked at DSW and Nordstrom Rack (NR is also a great place to find suits for homecoming)
